Stubborn bonnet hinge pins

Post by CRAIG SILER » Wed Jan 16, 2019 9:00 pm

Hello Listers: Checking with the group to see if there is anyone out there who has had experience on how to successfully remove bonnet hinge pins.  Don t want to damage the metal but can t seem to get the pins to budge.   Craig Siler TC2208 Sent from XFINITY Connect App

Craig, Done it a number of times.  If they are stuck as bad as it sounds you ll need to soak in penetrating fluid (best is a 50/50 mixture of acetone and automatic transmission fluid ATF), then use a drift to drive it far enough out that you can grip it with visegrips and pull/twist it out. Good luck,Gene GillamSaucier, MS

Craig The best anti-seize fluid is a 50:50 mix of ATF and acetone. After that has soaked in for a while trying to tap the pin out with a soft drift such as a hardwood or brass dowel to avoid mushrooming over the end. Once you have it out by about half an inch grip it in the chuck of a cordless drill. Then on a high torque - low speed setting rotate the pin slowly and pull. It will come out! The orginal pins are 1/4 inch brass. For easy replacement find some 6mm brass. Regards Peter Cole

I tried the ATF/acetone mix and then use Plus Gas which worked.

Hi Craig,

In addition to penetrant to loosen use a drill to extract.

Tap rod out far enough to put the end in the drill chuck and spin fast. As it is spinning you will be able to pull it out.

Have fun,

Doug,  Exactly right, but suggest use a slower drill speed, and , even better, beforehand, lots of penetrating oil and open and closing the bonnet to loosen everything up.   Then, with the panels on a large table,  a small drift pin to move it about one inch while flexing the panels slightly, then the drill routine.  It will come out, slow but sure.....save the rod, the size, being of British origin, is likely 'different'....:} Cheers,  Lee Jacobsen, Dearborn, MI   TC0780 -----Original Message----- From: 'Doug Pelton' doug@fromtheframeup.com [mg-tabc] mg-tabc-noreply@yahoogroups.com> To: spinning you will be able to pull it out.   Have fun,   Doug Pelton, Proprietor   From The Frame Up 3030 S. 40th St., Suite 5 Phoenix, AZ  85040   480-588-8185 For Fastest   Doug,  Exactly right, but suggest use a slower drill speed, and , even better, beforehand, lots of penetrating oil and open and closing the bonnet to loosen everything up.   Then, with the panels on a large table,  a small drift pin to move it about one inch while flexing the panels slightly, then the drill routine.  It will come out, slow but sure.....save the rod, the size, being of British origin, is likely 'different'....:} Cheers,  Lee Jacobsen, Dearborn, MI   TC0780 -----Original Message----- From: 'Doug Pelton' doug@fromtheframeup.com [mg-tabc] mg-tabc-noreply@yahoogroups.com> To: 'CRAIG SILER' craigsiler@comcast.net>; 'mg-tabc group' mg-tabc@yahoogroups.com> Sent: Thu, Jan 17, 2019 10:17 am Subject: RE: [mg-tabc] Stubborn bonnet hinge pins Hi Craig,   In addition to penetrant to loosen use a drill to extract.   Tap rod out far enough to put the end in the drill chuck and spin fast.  As it is spinning you will be able to pull it out.   Have fun,   Doug Pelton, Proprietor   From The Frame Up 3030 S. 40th St., Suite 5 Phoenix, AZ  85040   480-588-8185 For Fastest Service:  order@fromtheframeup.com Like us on FACEBOOK! Jose,  an impact convincer may convince the loops on the panels to 'abandon ship'.     Also, if you mushroom the end of the rod, issues will arise, as the rod is likely brass on some of the bonnets....:} Cheers,  Lee Jacobsen, Dearborn, MI   TA 2969 Tickford -----Original Message----- From: Jos Vicente Vargas jvvmusme@yahoo.com> To: doug doug@fromtheframeup.com>; craigsiler craigsiler@comcast.net>; mg-tabc mg-tabc@yahoogroups.com>; diecuts diecuts@aol.com> Sent: Thu, Jan 17, 2019 1:57 pm Subject: Re: [mg-tabc] Stubborn bonnet hinge pins there is a very effective tool that will do the job : an impact convincer Jos Vicente Vargas Musm Tel.
