TABC propshafts
Hi All,
I have a propshaft for use on TA1957. It measures approximately 44 inches flange to flange the same as the one on my TB. However both flanges are circular but the ones on my TB and the TA gearbox(XPAG)/backaxle are square with 2 of the sides having an inward curve. Bolt holes line up so no problem there. Does it matter if flanges are circular? How are propshafts balanced? I ve always made sure to rebolt flanges as they came apart on the TB but with the TA I won t be able to do this.

Attachments :Jeff,It should be OK, just make sure that the yokes 3 and 6 at the end of the shaft are aligned as below, most shafts only allow the spline to be fitted in one position, as per the drawing below, rarely you don't get this and the yokes 1 and 3 can end upfitted at various angles to each other.

Yes, It's worth finding someone who can balance the prop shaft, Go GOOGLE.

Thanks Clive. That s reassuring. The shaft has a balance weight on it but I suppose it s still worth getting it checked.
It would be great to meet you and your TB at TB80 based at Whitney, Oxfordshire in May. Come over for a day of you can t make the whole weekend. I can send details if you need them.

I ve had two(2) prop shafts rebuilt and balanced at a shop near me in Northern Cincinnati; I read somewhere thatA balanced prop shaft vs. an unbalanced one, [i]can [/i]make as much as another 500 R.P.M. increase!? hi Jan - why are you expecting backlash? Although I should point out that whereas a balanced prop-shaft will not magically give you another 500rpm, and unbalanced one will LOSE you that 500rpm...
I first heard this many years ago from Henry Stone, author of "The Insomnia Crew" who worked on race and record car preparation at Abingdon.

Whilst an unbalanced prop shaft will produce considerable vibration (indeed, enough to make the car undrivable, and possibly failure) I cannot see how it would affect engine revs. as there is no actual power absorption.

A couple of questions on propshafts that you or others may be able to answer as follows: Which parts of the shaft should be included in the balancing, e.g. bare shaft only, shaft and front yoke, shaft and yoke and flanges I've always understood that a propshaft should go back in the same orientation to gearbox and axle flanges as it came out to maintain balance. However if the gearbox and backaxle rotational parts are not included in the balancing why is this? In addition with a re-balanced shaft no previous orientation is applicable I have meticulously aligned my TB propshaft to punch marks rear and front for years. Was I wasting my time?

hi Clove (don't you just love typos!) that was the point I made: it would be a VERY bad propshaft to make a car undriveable, but onw which was slightly unbalanced would make itself felt and not let the engine rev as freely.
As to balancing, when I had mine done years ago, I went to the trouble of removing the two drive flanges after marking them up, and bolted them on to the shaft. The guy took one look and said: we can't do it with those on!

Fellows for drive/prop shaft work on this (USA) side of the pond I can recommend this shop they are a competent British car repair shop they also own a drive shaft speciality shop, Talk to JD and mention my name Joe Curto
