TC Bonnet Catch Mechanism

Hi Listers, Please, can anyone confirm which of the following finishes were on the 'Amal' bonnet catch mechanisms of the TC. Cadmium, Zinc or Nickel plated, or is there no preference? Thanks and a Merry Christmas to all, Mike Bate - TC10200 (Wet Cornwall UK).

Hi Mike,

 

I suspect latches were originally cad plated. Today cad plated is near impossible to duplicate due to environmental issues / regulation. Also note that cad is a dull silver and not pleasing to the eye. We replate all of our hardware with clear zinc to include latches. It is bright and clear and matches modern replacement hardware so it is our first choice.

Hi Doug,You're not entirely correct about Cad plating. Like zink, it can be polished out to a mirror like finish. Quite beautiful actually.  I cad plated my latches and then baked them in an oven. They had a really nice finish. I was told to do it by an old metal guy as he said the plating process could effect the springs making them brittle.  Not sure about that but still they had an almost iridescent look that had an "official " look to it.
