Bob, nail on head, you hit.
I remember a Maserati Birdcage coming up to auction. The car had belong to an Italian nobleman and he d raced it frequently. He drove
it home one day, having come well down the pecking order in that days race and order the car to be walled into the garage but maintained by his personal mechanic. When he died 50 years later (may not have been 50 but you get my drift) the wall was taken down
and the totally original car was put up for auction. The car was as it had finished it s last race. It had oil steaks along the sides and the body was full of small dings . I can t now remember the auctioneers estimate but do remember saying to Lynne that
this car will fetch far more than that, you don t get totally original Birdcages like that anymore. It sold for 3 time the high estimate.
Likewise, The Lord Howe Bugatti 57C sold at auction a few years ago at The Paris Retromobile show. I went to the show and looked at the
car which had fetched a record price. It had rusty wheel and headlamp rims The paint was original hand painted with the brush marks visible, the leather was worn and holed in places .. just what the true enthusiast wants,
I ve tried to not over restore mine. The problem is how do you say to the chromer and the painter, don t do a good job, I want it looking
like it left the factory You can t.

Part of the repercussions of soaring restoration costs is a much greater interest in clean original cars. It s expected to have a ding or worn spot on a vehicle that is wearing
60 year-old paint and leather, and the originality becomes a badge of honor. Compare that to a restored vehicle which is expected to have every facet as new. (Better than new in many cases). A good original car would often bring almost as much as a restored
version however, like most trends, it has gone ridiculously to the extreme. Barn Find cars are usually in dreadful condition hidden by dust and grime that the seller refuses to wash off for the patina. Yet they often bring high dollars even though
they will usually need major mechanical work just to function again. The TC in question appears to be one of the best unrestored TCs I have ever seen, but is it worth the price of two nicely restored TCs? Not to me at least. But someone had the interest
(and the funds) and that is what actually sets the value of anything.

A little surprised to see this as it seems to me prices are on the low side right now, based on Mecum and other auction sites for classics in general. Buts its hard to say, depends on the folks in the room I guess. ~Mark TC8126 Wet Ohio
