TC Gas Tank Bottom Repair
I have two TC tanks now that appear to be leaking from the bottom around the feet . When the original tank started leaking, I picked up a spare off eBay that had been stripped and sealed by ReNu. I had the new tank painted to match the car and installed it, only to find it leaked way worse than the original. Best guess is that ReNu tested it, but as soon as I installed it the pressure on the feet opened up cracks. This happened just days before the car was due to be featured as part of a inside classic car display. I bought some gas tank sealing putty and applied it liberally around the edges of the feet and the leak stopped! It actually held for close to a year it just started leaking again. OK that s the history lesson which you probably were not interested in. Now the question. Can the spare tank be repaired without ruining the visible paint? Besides the cost, I used the last of the original paint and getting a perfect color match is hard. Can the feet be removed and a reinforcement plate be soldered on the bottom of the tank to seal and strengthen it? The feet could then be tack=welded to the bottom plate. I think this would only require the paint to be stripped on the bottom, leaving the visible portion intact. Any experience with kind of thing? Suggestions? Thanks, Bob SteinTC5308 Sent from Mail for Windows 10

Re: TC Gas Tank Bottom Repair
Bob, I have done this, remove feet, weld up or solder cracks and reweld feet with spot weld to re install. Just repaint the lower section of the tank. Mine is black so no big deal.Steve TC2911

Re: TC Gas Tank Bottom Repair
Gentlemen:
I restored a 1948 TC several years ago which had a reproduction gas tank. I wanted to have the tank boiled out and any leaks repaired to preserve it. The shop I took it to was over zealous and tried to remove a coating they thought was inside the tank, so without consulting me first they cut access holes in the back of the tank and using excess heat warped the back of the tank and its top. They refused to replace the tank at first but located another used tank. Morale of the story: forget about tank lining compounds that render repairs impractical; purchase a reproduction tank; do not use coatings which unleaded gas eats away; be extremely careful which shop you contact for repairs; do not weld or solder a used tank yourself - it can explode.

It actually held for close to a year it just started leaking again.. Re: TC Gas Tank Bottom Repair
It goes without saying that if you are going to weld or solder a tank, it needs to be prepared properly. I have found that repeated rinsing with hot water and dish soap and leaving it sit for several days full of same works just fine.As far as coating tanks, not my preference, but my Morgan tank was done years and years ago before I restored it by someone else and it is fine. Unleaded does not harm these coatings at all.Steve TC2911

Re: TC Gas Tank Bottom Repair
They possibly could have removed a previous coating using a solvent Methyl Ethel Ketone (MEK) but it is a nasty solvent fume wise.
The older Sloshing Compound that we used in the 1980's did not hold up to ethanol and when it ( Ethanol) was introduced it liquefied the coating and plugged fuel lines. I had a pal with a Norton Motorcycle which used a fiberglass fuel tank the Ethanol softened the resin and it coated the valve guides when running and then solidified when the bike was off and jammed the valves , this was an issue with marine fuel tanks too.
I had a shop launch a TD fuel tank about 20 feet into the air trying to solder a small hole in a fuel tank with a torch which still had liquid sloshing compound , not a happy camper that day

It goes without saying that if you are going to weld or solder a tank, it needs to be prepared properly. I have found that repeated rinsing with hot water and dish soap and leaving it sit for several days full of same works just fine. As far as coating tanks, not my preference, but my Morgan tank was done years and years ago before I restored it by someone else and it is fine. Unleaded does not harm these coatings at all. Gentlemen: I restored a 1948 TC several years ago which had a reproduction gas tank.

[/quote] Bob, I have done this, remove feet, weld up or solder cracks and reweld feet with spot weld to re install. Just repaint the lower section of the tank. Mine is black so no big deal. It actually held for close to a year it just started leaking again.. Re: TC Gas Tank Bottom Repair
Hi all,Not so long ago I purchased a new S/S fuel tank for my MGA and it leaked on a weld. When I contacted the guy who made it he asked me to connect it up to a car exhaust and let it run for an hour to flush out the fumes so that it would be safe to weld.
The tank came back repaired fine - and I have seen him since so he survived! Apart from the initial leak it is a good fitting product.Tony

I ve welded many petrol tanks in my time, I just fill them with water to expel the fumes. The welding dries the inside.

Hi all,
Not so long ago I purchased a new S/S fuel tank for my MGA and it leaked on a weld. When I contacted the guy who made it he asked me to connect it up to a car exhaust and let it run for an hour to flush out the fumes so that it would be
safe to weld.
The tank came back repaired fine - and I have seen him since so he survived! Apart from the initial leak it is a good fitting product.
