Bright ideas wanted.
Just about banging my head against a brick wall. Put the TA to bed for the night and the following day it refused to start. Problem was that no petrol getting to the carbs. It had been the night before!
To cut a long story short...
Have had the tank off and checked both pipe unions on the bottom. Both clear and unobstructed including the gauze filter on the reserve outlet.
Have blown air in both directions through both petrol pipes from tank to main/reserve tap. There was fuel in the pipes because when I blew through from the tank end the petrol hit the ceiling! ( I had taken off the main/reserve tap.) Of course, when I blew air the other way the pipes were already empty. Both pipes are clear
Main/reserve tap is working. Have refurbished it with teflon instead of the cork which was not looking good. It works well giving a good seal on whichever side is closed whilst the other side is open and unobstructed.
Pipe from reserve tap to SU pump is unblocked.
All unions appear to be tight.
SU pump runs like mad but is not delivering petrol. Have tried a spare pump to no avail.
Anyone got any bright ideas?
Thanks in anticipation.

Re: No Petrol reaching the Carbs on my TA
Hi Ernie -
Sounds like the pump needs to be primed. How full is the tank? If it is full, then jack up the rear of the car as high as possible so that the fuel level is higher than the pump. Thus the line to the pump will be gravity fed to the greatest extent possible. The S.U. pump is a very efficient mover of fluid but a much less efficient mover of air, especially when trying to suck uphill! This is one of the reasons why M.G. relocated the pump from the high mount position in the engine compartment to the low mount position near the rear axle starting with the TF.

Re: No Petrol reaching the Carbs on my TA
Your next steps are to see if the pump pumps or if air is getting in the suction line(s). Remove end of hose from the fuel tap that goes to the fuel pump and submerge in a quart of gasoline. (Be safe!)Turn ignition on. Pump should draw gas out until carbs are full if diaphgram is good and suction screen is clean in bottom of pump. If pump checks out, chase down air in fuel line including unions on left side of firewall. Good luck.Tim BloomfieldTB0613Currently in Yukon CA

It had been the night before! To cut a long story short...Have had the tank off and checked both pipe unions on the bottom. Both clear and unobstructed including the gauze filter on the reserve outlet.Have blown air in both directions through both petrol pipes from tank to main/reserve tap. There was fuel in the pipes because when I blew through from the tank end the petrol hit the ceiling! ( I had taken off the main/reserve tap.) Of course, when I blew air the other way the pipes were already empty. Both pipes are clearMain/reserve tap is working. Have refurbished it with teflon instead of the cork which was not looking good. It works well giving a good seal on whichever side is closed whilst the other side is open and unobstructed.Pipe from reserve tap to SU pump is unblocked. All unions appear to be tight.SU pump runs like mad but is not delivering petrol. Have tried a spare pump to no avail.Anyone got any bright ideas? Thanks in anticipation. Ernie
