Electrical Fuel Pump

Post by Bruce Doran Veevers » Sun Jun 17, 2018 4:36 pm

I have been considering rebuilding my existing pump and a spare. It is now being suggested that I put an electric one in line under the car out of sight Sent from my iPhone

Bruce,

If the body of you existing pump is good then I would advice rebuilding it. The SU electric pump is very reliable if maintained. The points need cleaning and adjusting every couple of years, just as the points in a distributor do. It’s lack of this maintenance that cause failure.

My pump body was so corroded it fell apart (broke) when I tried to strip it down. I had to get a modern electronic replica which failed in 3 months. It’s replacement has been OK for 21 months but I will always have fears about it.

New points are available from Burlen Services and now have twin contacts .. but are a direct replacement.  I now run a solid state version and carry the old one as a spare, but a bit surprised to hear you had a problem with your electronic one Norm.  Was it just a rogue one or are there other instances of them failing?  I thought they were supposed to bullet proof. I believe, from NTG, that they are prone to failure but once you get a good one it should be ok. We used the old SU pump for over 30 years without a problem if they are serviced. I was trained by "real" mechanics who would service the SU pump on the major 12,000 mile service. The points we're cleaned using a small oil stone and then adjusted.

In the past I bought two electronic fuel pumps (not SU), one fitted to a midget failed after a sort while the other was ok. On the TB I had trouble with the pump last year and replaced the points which after a bit of fiddling to get set up correctly, have so far worked ok. I have however bought a Burlen / SU electronic one from the Octagon club, I haven't tried it yet and at the moment carry it as a spare though at some point I may swap them round.RegardsMike From: "Norman Verona norman@frenchblat.com [mg-tabc]" mg-tabc-noreply@yahoogroups.com> To: Tweed lizandtweed@yahoo.co.uk> Cc: 'Bruce Doran Veevers' ; mg-tabc@yahoogroups.com Sent: Monday, 18 June 2018, 10:02 Subject: Re: RE: [mg-tabc] Electrical Fuel Pump   I believe, from NTG, that they are prone to failure but once you get a good one it should be ok. Hi Bruce
Put in series at SU one other FACET Pump-
TWO  pump are the practical and economic way that I fellow, it works for me
I have added also a switch that permit the activation of the  ONE or the OTHER
Protect the fuel entry of the FACET with the (FACET) filter- noise can be attenuated by silent blocs
Fuel pressure are sufficient for our cars
In my car FACET pump is forward  under  the  SU, hide to the view- BUT it can be also nearest the tank

Bruce, The gold standard for SU pump repairs in the US is Dave Dubois. Click here for a link to take you to his website. He will be able to service your pump to provide you with a reliable spare. IMHO the SU pump, when set up correctly and fitted with a Transil to extend the life of the points is pretty much bullet proof. There is no need for the SU electronic conversion. It is just an additional complexity and another potential source of unreliability. Dave has his own electronic conversion which would be a better bet if you choose to go down that route. RegardsPeter Cole.

I think Mike it's a good idea to put the electronic one on the car for a while just to make sure it works.  I have heard of instances where a new 'untried' spares carried for emergencies has not 'come to the rescue' as it were.   At least you know the one with the points is OK. Tweed.

Yes I think that is the best thing to do, certainly before we do any more long trips. Once I have completed the other bits I am currently doing I will switch them over.RegardsMike From: Tweed lizandtweed@yahoo.co.uk> To: Norman Verona norman@frenchblat.com>; MIKE INGLEHEARN mingle54@btinternet.com> Cc: 'Bruce Doran Veevers' ; "mg-tabc@yahoogroups.com" mg-tabc@yahoogroups.com> Sent: Monday, 18 June 2018, 15:06 Subject: Re: RE: [mg-tabc] Electrical Fuel Pump I think Mike it's a good idea to put the electronic one on the car for a while just to make sure it works.  I have heard of instances where a new 'untried' spares carried for emergencies has not 'come to the rescue' as it were.   At least you know the one with the points is OK. electronic conversion SU from a well known rebuilder to an MGB, and it didn't last.  Points pumps have proven very reliable for me. I have them fitted to four cars including my daily driver. The one in my TC has been in there since 1980 with no maintenance and is still going strong, although I'm sensing it's time for a rebuild. - Steve Simmons, TC8975

If the body of you existing pump is good then I would advice rebuilding it. The SU electric pump is very reliable if maintained. The points need cleaning and adjusting every couple of years, just as the points in a distributor do. It s lack of this maintenance that cause failure.

My pump body was so corroded it fell apart (broke) when I tried to strip it down. I had to get a modern electronic replica which failed in 3 months. It s replacement has been OK for 21 months but I will always have fears about it.
