TC turn signal problem
Fellow MGTers,
I have a head puzzling problem with the installation of turn signals on my restoration project 47 TC.
All parts are new. Lights, harness, relay, switch and flasher.
It has an EXU wiring harness using a single 8 post relay system. Two high mount lights on the gas tank and two D lights lower down on the frame plate.
Here is the problem..
I have parking lights and brake lights working just fine. And the turn signals work properly on the right side of the car. But, when the switch is turned to the left turn position all lights flash. All front turn signals and all rear signals. It's like I have hazard flashers going in the left turn position.
I have checked the wiring on the relay and it appears to be correct according to the wiring diagram I received with the harness. I have checked the switch and it seems to be wired correctly. There was a jumper from the left turn post and the ground post for the switch light. I had to remove it to get the right turn lights to flash correctly. (The wiring diagram that Doug Pelton has on his tech tips does not show any such jumper). It does show a jumper connection between the power in post and another along side it and this connection is internal to the switch and obviously is there as I am getting power to the left side when I select left turn. I know this is getting long and complicated so I will summarize by saying... right turn works, left turn makes hazard flashers all around.
Am I dealing with a bad relay? Something not connected correctly? I am at a loss for ideas on how to narrow it down... I cannot find a schematic of the 8 post relay to try to determine what might be wrong inside it.

Re: TC turn signal problem
Which 8 post relay are you using. The one from MGA vintage?

Re: TC turn signal problem
Neil,
First, here is a link to a schematic of the relay box http://mgaguru.com/mgtech/electric/et105.htm
Second, I suspect it is the switch. I has a similar problem with my EXU turn signals. I have a feeling that switch was made with several wiring configurations, and not all are compatible with the MG turn signals. I had to cut an internal jumper but that wasn't the total solution. It was over 20 years ago and I don't remember the exact details but I vaguely remember it was the indicator light circuit. As a quick test, remover the indicator bulb and try the signals.

Fellow MGTers, I have a head puzzling problem with the installation of turn signals on my restoration project 47 TC.
I recently changed my turn signal bulbs to the LED bulb from Abingdon spares. When I installed the bulb in the left signal it did the same thing you ve described. I removed the bulb and reinstalled it. Made sure it was seated properly and it has worked fine since. Don t know why it did it.

Neil, First, here is a link to a schematic of the relay box http://mgaguru.com/mgtech/electric/et105.htm Second, I suspect it is the switch. Re: TC turn signal problem
Thanks to all who replied to my question on the turn signals. I think I have found the problem. It appears the right side of the relay is frozen in the on position and does not release when turn signals are either not selected or the left signal is selected. By being stuck in the on position the right side works when it is selected and by not releasing stays on when the left side is selected. This causes all the turn signals to light up and flash like 4 way flashers (hazard flashers). I intend to investigate further and possibly open the relay and free the right side if possible. That should solve the problem. Thanks to everyone who gave of their time to reply with a diagram of the relay, wiring diagrams and wise council. This forum is a never ending supply of great advice.Neil NelsonFleming Island, Fl TC 4161
