Might be less resistive/heat losses in a 220 system since there is less current flow.  But I would be surprised if it makes a measurable difference in one garage in one home.   ----pps From: "'Bob Grunau' grunau.garage@sympatico.ca [mg-tabc]" mg-tabc-noreply@yahoogroups.com> To: 'Steve S' mail@mgnuts.com>; mg-tabc@yahoogroups.com Sent: Thursday, May 24, 2018 2:37 PM Subject: RE: [mg-tabc] Tracking width of a TC (for a 4 post lift)   Hi Steve,As it has been described to me, using 220 takes half the amps of 110 -Agreed. That is true. However, P=IV.  ie  P ( power in watts )   = I ( amps) x V ( volts ) .  So double the Voltage and you halve the amps, but power, or watts/kilowatts, remains the same .  Your electric bill or usage depends on kilowatts used. and as a result the motor can run more efficiently. Maybe, but -I doubt it.I can't explain the physics behind it but the lift time is supposed to faster and therefore less run time.  -well the lift time depends entirely on the motor speed and gear reduction in the drive train.   Bob GrunauOn 5/24/2018 10:13 AM, Bob Grunau wrote:
Steve,Good description. However, you say  Power options normally include 110 or 220 volts. Either will work fine, but 220 will raise your lift faster and is more energy efficient. How is it more energy efficient?? Power is power in watts of kilowatts??BobTC8654EXU According to the brown book, the track is 3' 9".  A single post lift is infinitely adjustable for width, and has no restrictions on the width of the vehicle stored below.  They do cost more however.  See here for details: http://www.mgnuts.com/autolifts/- Steve Simmons, TC8975   Anyone know the distance between the wheels of a TC by chance?  Mine is stored an hour away at the moment.  I'm planning on purchasing a 4 post lift for my new house and need to make sure it'll fit as I'm doing my initial research.  I also plan on storing my '66 442 under the TC.  So super narrow car up top, and super wide one below..... I may not find a lift that will fit those needs.  Thanks Mike

There was also mention of motors running slightly cooler, and in the typical home setup of there being far less line loss. So perhaps the efficiency they speak of is simply due to less line loss, combined with better response at startup / load from using so many fewer amps. As it has been described to me, using 220 takes half the amps of 110 -Agreed. Maybe, but -I doubt it. I can't explain the physics behind it but the lift time is supposed to faster and therefore less run time. -well the lift time depends entirely on the motor speed and gear reduction in the drive train. Steve,

Good description. However, you say Power options normally include 110 or 220 volts. Either will work fine, but 220 will raise your lift faster and is more energy efficient.

How is it more energy efficient?? Power is power in watts of kilowatts??

According to the brown book, the track is 3' 9". A single post lift is infinitely adjustable for width, and has no restrictions on the width of the vehicle stored below. They do cost more however. See here for details: http://www.mgnuts.com/autolifts/

Anyone know the distance between the wheels of a TC by chance?

Mine is stored an hour away at the moment. I'm planning on purchasing a 4 post lift for my new house and need to make sure it'll fit as I'm doing my initial research.

I also plan on storing my '66 442 under the TC. So super narrow car up top, and super wide one below..... I may not find a lift that will fit those needs.

Thanks

Mike

The car on the bottom is the one you use the most (without having to swap them out). --Mike On 05/24/2018 12:12 PM, MIKE INGLEHEARN mingle54@btinternet.com [mg-tabc] wrote:

Re: Tracking width of a TC (for a 4 post lift)

Post by Bill Miller » Thu May 24, 2018 12:53 pm

Just to add my two cents to the discussion.  I purchased a two post lift primarily to work on my TC.  After laying under the car to install an exhaust system, an ad in Hemmings daily news caught my eye.  It was for a two post lift for low ceiling applications.  It is sold in the US under the name MaxJax.  The URL for the company is https://www.maxjaxusa.com/  The system is extremely well built and finished (yes it;s made in China).  But for what  needed it was the best buy.  It is hydraulic and portable.  IT can be removed from the floor and stored in a corner of the garage if needed.  It is mounted on the floor with five 7/8" diameter expandable collars.  It took about 4 hours to install once unpacked.  That is another story as the parts are quite heavy.  I had an engine hoist to help.  It is rated at 6,000 pounds so the TC is no problem.  At full lift there is 48" clearance under the car.  Plenty of room to work.  The only thing I would change would be the installed distance between the two posts.  I have to extend the lift arms to full extent for the TC. Re: Tracking width of a TC (for a 4 post lift)

Post by diecuts2333 » Thu May 24, 2018 1:12 pm

Hi all,  I had looked at 4 post lifts, 'Backyard buddy etc, but then saw a video at Redline Equipment, and it showed an Expedition being lifted six feet with a single pole lift.   Here is a link... https://www.bestbuyautoequipment.com/6k ... 3gQAvD_BwE  The cost , 2 years ago , was $2200 USD.   I bought two of them.  Negotiate on cost, they will come down..... They work great, and are infinitely adjustable, and , when delivered, even include a nicely made steel rack fixture, that, when wheels are attached, makes a handy conveyance for body shells and chassis frames. I can move cars all over the garage, while they are on this lift.  I checked with my contacts in China about buying direct.    $1000, plus a container cost , which is $500 but at least 30 lifts could be put in the container.   Ten would cost $10,500........China's cost to make?    Around $450 I am told, but really?.   I don't see how they can make it that low cost.....the quality is great! That is true.. Maybe, but -I doubt it. I can't explain the physics behind it but the lift time is supposed to faster and therefore less run time.  -well the lift time depends entirely on the motor speed and gear reduction in the drive train.    Bob Grunau

Steve, Good description. However, you say  Power options normally include 110 or 220 volts. Either will work fine, but 220 will raise your lift faster and is more energy efficient. How is it more energy efficient?? Power is power in watts of kilowatts?? I may not find a lift that will fit those needs.    Thanks   Mike

Re: Tracking width of a TC (for a 4 post lift)

Post by Alex Haugland » Fri May 25, 2018 11:43 pm

Perhaps more directly applicable, I have 5 4 post 110v lifts I use for storage. Generally they use a single hydraulic cylinder mounted under one of the tracks to lift the lift. The other track is laid over the end beams and bolted in place but is otherwise not position-dependent. It should be fairly easy to add another set of bolt holes to mount the track without the ram at whatever place you would like. The steel beams front and rear are pretty thick so it may take a hefty drill to drill the large holes needed. This would limit the usefulness of any included drip trays or jacking tray. My 110v lift takes a full 2 minutes to rise to the top. They're good for storage but somewhat slow for continuous use. I also recommend cutting plywood to completely fill in the space between the treads and putting absorbent pads or trays under the likely drips as otherwise it's very easy to get oil drips all over the car below. --Alex Haugland TC6567

Re: Tracking width of a TC (for a 4 post lift)

Post by Roger Furneaux » Sat May 26, 2018 4:10 am

Fascinating though all this talk of lifts is, I was more interested in what a "442" was! Well Wikepedia tells me that it is an Oldsmobile, originally called "4-4-2" which sounds more like a locomotive wheel designation...of course most of you knew that, but us Brits are ignorant of such matters! --Alex Haugland TC6567 On May 24, 2018, at 6:13 PM, "Michael Graziano mgraziano1@gmail.com [mg-tabc]" mg-tabc-noreply@yahoogroups.com> wrote: Anyone know the distance between the wheels of a TC by chance? Mine is stored an hour away at the moment. I'm planning on purchasing a 4 post lift for my new house and need to make sure it'll fit as I'm doing my initial research. I also plan on storing my '66 442 under the TC. So super narrow car up top, and super wide one below..... I may not find a lift that will fit those needs.
