Service life of tires just 14k miles ? Vintage tire suppliers must really dumb down their tires to create an endless market. My daily driver tires typically last 75k miles.

As to how many miles these will go, we will have to see and this sort of coincides with how many miles I will go as we both are very close in age.  I do find the improved directional stability much to my liking and may be willing to pay a price in slightly increased tire wear.

Went back to the factory advised 3/16 toe-in and no more problems with rubber leaving my tyres. But yes, Wanda is wandering a tad again. Just part of the charm driving a 70 year old MG.

Yes Norman, I set mine at 1/2" as specified for the TA and TB in the manuals I have.  Much improved, steers almost like my Miatas.

I seem to remember someone saying that the TC will steer better if the track is set far greater than the 3/16" (5mm) the handbook says.

Am I dreaming?

Murry,

In our English climate tyres will be OK for 5/6 years, it s all that UV from something called sunshine that makes your tyres go hard ..

What are they made from, concrete?  More importantly, what is your daily driver?

I don t know for sure what milage my Avons get on my TC.  I do a lot of country, long distance driving in it but for as much as I ve done I ve never worn out a set of tyres on my TC or indeed my MG-F.  I change them every four - five years regardless of the tread depth left.  Reason being the rubber gets way too hard, their performance drops right off and the rubber begins to perish and you run a real risk of blow outs.  I find the risk of this happening far outweighs the cost of new tyres every four - five years.

But seriously Bill, what sort of tyres give you 75k miles (90,500 km) life?  I am lucky to get 30k miles out of the Pirelli Crosstrax on my Range Rover .

.I used to get 7,000 to 10,000 miles out of my TA tyres if i was lucky..   The makes varied from Dunlop 4.50 to motor bike 4.00 as well as some 4.75 as well as remoulds with the best of these being Watts remoulds that looked like a large motorbike tyre with a blocky tread (interesting drive on those). Those were the days!! . My daily driver MG ZR Diesel (205 50 16 ) gets 12,000 out of a set again if i am lucky.   Most of the other cars i have had did 30,000 miles.   Maestro Diesels (the best cars i have ever owned except for the rust), Ford Escort ( a number of these in various models, petrol diesel etc), Ford Anglia etc.   The MGB and the MGC i cannot remember so it must have been fairly good mileage.   I have found no difference in high quality Michelin Avon etc or Chinese chewing gum types either in mileage or grip.   Noise does change with the makes on the ZR as well as road feel through the steering.   I therefore buy the cheapest because they wear out before they get old.   The best die young !   David TA 0455 UK

I bought a set of Avon semi race tyres for the Caterham. They were road legal just.

Did just over 1000 miles on them. Kept to sensible tyres since.

As a retired tire engineer, I've read some of this thread's commentary and felt a review of historic tire performance capability might help us all remember that today's average radial tire has almost nothing in common with bias ply tires of 1945 (except for being round and black!). I've attached a link to a thorough 1997 analysis of the US tire industry that includes a short technology section (2.1.4 ....pg 60) that highlights 12,000 miles as a bias tire's potential, 40,000 for a (1997) radial, and even a comment on the mid-60's "forgotten" bias-belted product that dominated the early muscle car era (that delivered 20,000+ miles by my recollection). Today's 70,000+ mile radials did not exist when this paper was created. http://www.nber.org/chapters/c8649.pdf Every tire, of any age-or-type exists as a compromise depending upon the intended vehicle's need for mileage, ride, handling, appearance, price, etc. Therefore, while all observations of mileage in the group's discussion are valid for the tire referenced ....   comparing a TC's bias tire to a modern race tire, or an average radial tire of today is ....meaningless except for their being "similarly" round and black.Mike LongUSA    On Friday, March 9, 2018 5:01 AM, "'Norman Verona' norman@frenchblat.com [mg-tabc]" mg-tabc-noreply@yahoogroups.com> wrote:   I bought a set of Avon semi race tyres for the Caterham. Re: Toe in for TC

Post by CHARLES HUGHES » Mon Mar 12, 2018 8:56 am

75K miles on one set of tires?  February of 1995 we bought an Isuzu 4X4 pickup (officially referred to in Isuzu Shop and Parts Manuals as Series TC!!) which we still own.  In November of 2011 we replaced the original Bridgestone Desert Duelers at 106K miles (not km).  There was still plenty of tread, but when I noticed cracks in one of the sidewalls, it was time for all of them to go.  Those tires outlasted the exhaust system! - Mike Hughes  - -  '37 TA 0512 On Thursday, March 8, 2018 8:45 PM, "Murray G Arundell arundell@ghs.com.au [mg-tabc]" mg-tabc-noreply@yahoogroups.com> wrote:   What are they made from, concrete? As to how many miles these will go, we will have to see and this sort of coincides with how many miles I will go as we both are very close in age.  I do find the improved directional stability much to my liking and may be willing to pay a price in slightly increased tire wear.Steve TC2911 From: "dezwartj@telus.net [mg-tabc]" mg-tabc-noreply@yahoogroups.com> To: Stephen D Stierman morgan7709@sbcglobal.net>; norman@frenchblat.commg-tabc@yahoogroups.com  Sent: Thursday, March 8, 2018 5:51 PM Subject: Re: [mg-tabc] Toe in for TC  And you might leave a trace of rubber on the road as well....  I did this in the past and indeed, the TC steers just lovely.
