Synthetic Blend

A question, folks - I have to replace my break-in oil on my TA and I had ordered Hemmings Synthetic Blend 10W 30 oil.  What do you think of this oil?  Seems to have right stuff in it, but Synthetic/blend?  How much real oil and how much synthetic?

I ran a 20W-50 blend in a couple of cars for several years. When it came time to rebuild one of the engines, the wear looked identical to any other engine I had previously run on regular dino oil. Perhaps a limited sampling, but maybe it will help some. As I recall, I was told it was a 50/50 blend but I could be remembering incorrectly. Hi Allan

 

Has your TA got an original type engine?

The MPJG in a TA has a cork clutch that runs in oil. If it s too thin and slippery the clutch may slip. Also a thin oil will find its way down the valve guides and the engine will smoke. I have run my TA for many years on a straight 30W mineral oil but recently changed to 20/50. The oil pressure remains around 60psi driving and 40psi at tick over. The oil pump in these engines is excellent. You don t need any special oil in these engines.

The oil debate is a never ending one. I have worked for powertrain engineering companies for 30 years. Even with the science that comes having to get lubrication correct for both cost and product life there seems to be decisions powered by oil company marketing. Few notes here and the rest can be a deep dive with a Google search. An oils function / quality is based on its base stock. Even the crappiest base stock, (say group 2,) is 10 times better than what was factory fill when the T's were produced. Simply put oil weight ( viscosity ) is best selected based on bearing clearances and operating temps. Synthetic base stock makes a better oil, period. Does not mean one of our engines can reap any benefit. Whether 100% or a blend, synthetic oils ability to flow better will find its way out of the engine easier. It will make a bigger puddle than regular. That ability to flow will also drain it back to the sump faster. That action dictates that you have additives that "stay behind" to prevent dry start ups especially after long periods of inactivity. Thicker oil stays in loose bearings better but has less ability to absorb heat. With all of the above said there is still no definitive answer to what would be best, especially if you don't know how loose your motor is. Personally I would run a non synthetic multi grade somewhere between a 10-30 or a 10-40. I would also make sure it had a high ZDDP count. They tout that additive as being good for flat tappets but its cold start protection and anti wear properties are great for all moving parts. As noted, if you want a deep dive on lubricants, google Oil Base Stocks and read up on how modern oils are formulated. Our motors are so under stressed any modern oil will be acceptable. Run dino oil when breaking in an engine.  Then switch over to full synthetic no sooner than the second scheduled oil change.  Reason?  Synthetic is too slick and doesn't allow the rings to scrape the freshly honed cylinder bores enough to seat the rings properly.  I work at a dealership and we occasionally see vehicles coming in to the service department with excessive oil consumption issues at unusually low mileages.  In almost every case the new vehicle owner drained the oil and replaced it with synthetic shortly after taking delivery.  I'm talking about vehicles with 30-50K miles burning oil at a rate more consistent with the kind of oil consumption one might expect to see in vehicles with over 200K miles on the clock! - Mike Hughes  - -  '37 TA 0512 On Wednesday, January 31, 2018 3:03 AM, "Allan Chalmers allanchalmers@yahoo.com [mg-tabc]" mg-tabc-noreply@yahoogroups.com> wrote:   A question, folks - I have to replace my break-in oil on my TA and I had ordered Hemmings Synthetic Blend 10W 30 oil.  What do you think of this oil?  Seems to have right stuff in it, but Synthetic/blend?  How much real oil and how much synthetic? I recently had work done on the head of my J2. The mechanic later changed the oil (Penrite HPR 40) for Valvoline 20-50. As you know MGs mark their territory but I detected an increase in drips under the parked car so I am going back to Penrite . HPR is a mineral base 25-70 oil and is great for prewars. It is expensive (comes from Australia) and is available worldwide, but in the US can be bought only from Restoration Supply in California. The shipping to NJ kills me. I use Castrol 20-50 mineral in the TC for the last 35 years. And yes the TC always leaves the usual drips, but not excessive. Oil pressure is good in all the cars.

Run dino oil when breaking in an engine.  Then switch over to full synthetic no sooner than the second scheduled oil change.  Reason?  Synthetic is too slick and doesn't allow the rings to scrape the freshly honed cylinder bores enough to seat the rings properly. 

 

I work at a dealership and we occasionally see vehicles coming in to the service department with excessive oil consumption issues at unusually low mileages.  In almost every case the new vehicle owner drained the oil and replaced it with synthetic shortly after taking delivery.  I'm talking about vehicles with 30-50K miles burning oil at a rate more consistent with the kind of oil consumption one might expect to see in vehicles with over 200K miles on the clock!

A question, folks - I have to replace my break-in oil on my TA and I had ordered Hemmings Synthetic Blend 10W 30 oil.  What do you think of this oil?  Seems to have right stuff in it, but Synthetic/blend?  How much real oil and how much synthetic?
