Hello to all

 

I have gone through a mess with Yahoo which ended up in not being able to log on, unable to reset my password, calling them, and being told I was hacked.  Apparently the hack occurred while I was i Europe and might be resulting from when Yahoo got breached or when Experian got breached more recently.  I was told the hackers were either "rbn" (Russian) or "trojan", apparently not Russian.

 

I got no help from Yahoo;  I was directed by them to another web site which, after telling me I had put out child porn, offered to "fix" the hacking for $2000. The fix would be "guaranteed for 3 years. I was told the hack was not in my computer, but rather that my web address (IP number) had been used to show me as the perpetrator.

 

I declined the offer, as I don't think anyone can guarantee anything in the computer world except for the instant when something happens.  It also occurred to me that Yahoo might be the owner, or have an interest in, the "fixing company" they sent me to. 

 

I then called Comcast, went through 3 layers of tech support, and was told i would be called at 5 pm that afternoon to have my questions answered.  Of course the  call never came.  

 

I did learn that using a "dynamic" IP somewhat impedes this kind of IP misuse.  Comcast immediately blamed my modem (which is not theirs) but I never got an answer to whether Comcast  uses "static" (the same) IP for its subscribers, or whether they change the IP at each on-line log-in ("dynamic").   I suspect a static IP is used, as they never answered the question.

 

I also learned that a modem picks a new IP each time it is re-powered.  All I have to do is shut off dc power to the modem and reboot it periodically.

 

I thought all this might be of interest to the group, as we are tied to Yahoo.  Can we go somewhere else?

 

I shall never use Yahoo again.

 

I've written this as this kind of xxxx may be common;  you may not be the only one who is being played with.

I belong to an electronics instrumentation group that was previously on Yahoo.  It became so bad that the group maintainers just packed up and moved to https://groups.io/  So far the move has been great.  Yahoo s just a mess and it s never going to improve.  I m surprised they even still offer groups.   I ve forgotten who is the current list manager but maybe they could look into moving as well.   Dave TC 0524
