I just recently saw a TV Program or pictures where the car had the starter under the intake manfold.

I think the worse old car to work on was the MGA Twin Cam. Getting the starter off that was major surgery.

 

I have this theory about modern cars. There s a secret award made to car designers for who can make the worst design for a mechanic to work on. Whoever designed the Mini Cooper S with the supercharger won the 2005 award.

Hi Listers,

I had my local machine shop turn down the heads of the bolts so that I could get my ring spanner/socket

over them. Still looks right, but perhaps a bit OTT.

The two outter bolts are not much of a problem, it's the one tucked in against the block that's the B****r. Best solution is to use an Allen headed bolt here and then it's easy to get past the exhaust with a 1/2 or 3/8 inch drive ratchet with a longish socket extension with an Allen key head attached. I have this theory about modern cars.. There s a secret award made to car designers for who can make the worst design for a mechanic to work on. Whoever designed the Mini Cooper S with the supercharger won the 2005 award.

I have a set of Melco Whitworth box spanners. The threads in the bell housing and setscrews have been cleaned and died and tapped. They will screw in by hand easily and then a box spanner tightens them. Takes a few seconds.

Hi Listers,

I had my local machine shop turn down the heads of the bolts so that I could get my ring spanner/socket

over them. Still looks right, but perhaps a bit OTT.

Another option is ARP 672-1012, M10x1.5x1 with 12 point, 12mm dia. reduced wrenching head suitable for 12mm wrench. Available in black oxide chrome-moly or S/S.

The two outter bolts are not much of a problem, it's the one tucked in against the block that's the B****r.  Best solution is to use an Allen headed bolt here and then it's easy to get past the exhaust with a 1/2 or 3/8 inch drive ratchet with a longish socket extension with an Allen key head attached.    Clive
