Attachments :Just a note of correction for you on starter gear teeth.

TA has 11

TC has 10.

It could be your TC starter has a TA gear. Both are the same specs except for the teeth #.

Might anyone know if the TA and TC starter are interchangeable?   I never realized I had TC starter on my TA; it is the way it was when I bought it.  As you can see from the photo the down pipe has been crimped to get around the starter.   I understand the TA starter has 10 teeth  and the TC 11 teeth.  I ve no idea what the ring gear is but I would assume original TA given the block and gearbox are original to the car.  My options seem to be to 1) leave it as is or 2) cut out the crippled section and replace it with a new section forward of the starter or 3) buy a TA starter and new down pipe.  I am fine with #3 but want to make sure the TA starter would work.

Thanks.

Attachments : Mark,   May I suggest another alternative switch to solenoid starting?  My engine has a TC-style starter too.  I did not like the clearance at the exhaust and the need to brace the small centre dash panel while pulling the mechanical starter.  So during the restoration I modified the starter mechanism by removing the switch and replacing with the plate from another (shell only) switch bought on Ebay.  That only needed a solid grommet to seal it.  Then remove all the loose copper bits in the end of the starter and make a thin copper strip (in my case, one layer only of 15mm domestic copper pipe) to bridge the two terminals.  That gains some two inches between the starter end and the exhaust pipe (photo attached). I sourced a solenoid and small push switch from AES in the UK.  The solenoid I fixed to the bulkhead using existing holes, and redirected the starter cable to it.  I bought a ready made up joining cable from the same company to link the solenoid to the starter terminal.  The switch can be made to fit the existing dash hole by filing one or two flats on the thread (I forget which).  Then run a supply to it, and a wire to the solenoid.  Plus an earth wire from the solenoid to the body (the petrol pump earth should be nearby. I much prefer this arrangement which is not obvious to observers.  Usual caveats apply.  Ask me for part numbers if you wish to look into this option further. Simple, innit?   Regards to all, Ian Linton TA3120 Lewes, East Sussex, UK From: mg-tabc-noreply@yahoogroups.com Sent: Thursday, November 09, 2017 12:51 PM To: mg-tabc@yahoogroups.com Cc: 47tc23@comcast.net Subject: [mg-tabc] TA vs TC starter [1 Attachment]

Mark, In addition to the difference in the number of teeth on the gears I believe the location of the switch is different on the TA being located on the top and not the end of the starter. That is the way it is on my VA and I thought that the TA used the same starter. The TC exhaust manifold has the flange tipped forward and the pipe sweeps forward and arcs around the projecting starter switch. I am reasonably sure that the TA and VA exhaust manifold have the flange parallel to the floor so the pipe drops straight down then sweeps back beneath the starter. Here is a photo of a TA MPJG (not mine) fitted with the type of starter motor and switch I am describing.   Regards, -- Frank frankgraham@msn.com --
