Thanks. Mark O DayTA 2213 Might anyone know if the TA and TC starter are interchangeable? I never realized I had TC starter on my TA; it is the way it was when I bought it. As you can see from the photo the down pipe has been crimped to get around the starter. I understand the TA starter has 10 teeth and the TC 11 teeth. I ve no idea what the ring gear is but I would assume original TA given the block and gearbox are original to the car. My options seem to be to 1) leave it as is or 2) cut out the crippled section and replace it with a new section forward of the starter or 3) buy a TA starter and new down pipe. I am fine with #3 but want to make sure the TA starter would work.

Re: TA vs TC starter
Attachments :Mark,My TC had solenoid starting when I purchased it 40+ years ago in 1966, and I certainly would not return to the original mechanical starter, for similar reasons to those Ian mentions.Reading Ian s e-mail I can confirm that mine is configured in a very similar way to his car.Graham Parnell, in Silverton, DevonshireTC3423 From: mg-tabc@yahoogroups.com [mailto:mg-tabc@yahoogroups.com] On Behalf Of 'TABC' tabc@talktalk.net [mg-tabc]

Subject: Re: [mg-tabc] TA vs TC starter Mark, May I suggest another alternative switch to solenoid starting? My engine has a TC-style starter too. I did not like the clearance at the exhaust and the need to brace the small centre dash panel while pulling the mechanical starter. So during the restoration I modified the starter mechanism by removing the switch and replacing with the plate from another (shell only) switch bought on Ebay. That only needed a solid grommet to seal it. Then remove all the loose copper bits in the end of the starter and make a thin copper strip (in my case, one layer only of 15mm domestic copper pipe) to bridge the two terminals. That gains some two inches between the starter end and the exhaust pipe (photo attached).I sourced a solenoid and small push switch from AES in the UK. The solenoid I fixed to the bulkhead using existing holes, and redirected the starter cable to it. I bought a ready made up joining cable from the same company to link the solenoid to the starter terminal. The switch can be made to fit the existing dash hole by filing one or two flats on the thread (I forget which). Then run a supply to it, and a wire to the solenoid. Plus an earth wire from the solenoid to the body (the petrol pump earth should be nearby.I much prefer this arrangement which is not obvious to observers. Usual caveats apply. Ask me for part numbers if you wish to look into this option further.Simple, innit? Re: TA vs TC starter
Attachments :While my car is a TD and has a different starter than TA/C when I fitted a supercharger the choke linkage got close to some of the TD electrics . I went the route of fitting an electric solenoid, all well and good BUT I wanted to keep the T type pull cable, so I made up a bracket and mounted a british motorcycle brake light switch which was similar in action to a TC brake light switch , so I made a mounting bracket fitted a switch and an anchor for the cable and then did the wiring to make the electric solenoid work and I kept my original pull cable. If you do not want to do all that a TR3 starter push switch mounts in the T dash panel

Re: TA vs TC starter
Attachments :Agreed. That is why he needs to validate tooth numbers to see what kind of ring gear he has. I would expect a TA ring gear. So if he has a TC starter, he would have to have a TC starter with TA gear on it. Subject: RE: [mg-tabc] TA vs TC starter Doug, Surely a ten tooth starter will jam in an 11 tooth flywheel (or vice-versa). I was once supplied a 9 tooth instead of a 10 tooth starter (for my Caterham) and it wouldn t even turn over. Subject: RE: [mg-tabc] TA vs TC starter Just a note of correction for you on starter gear teeth.TA has 11TC has 10. It could be your TC starter has a TA gear. Both are the same specs except for the teeth #. Doug Pelton, ProprietorFrom The Frame Up480-588-8185For Fastest Service: order@fromtheframeup.comLike us on FACEBOOK!

Thanks to all who replied and provided photos and suggestions.
I find that the TC starter on my TA has 10 teeth on the pinion and not a TA correct 11 tooth pinion. The ring gear on my TA has 96 teeth. The starting process worked fine for many years and there are no shows of wear on there pinion or ring gear teeth. But, I want to place a TA starter on so I can place the correct down pipe from the manifold.
Can anyone confirm how many teeth should be on a TA ring gear? If it is 96 then it should be fine with a TA starter. I attempted to count the ring gear teeth on the photo on Bill Davis TA engine rebuild site and I came up with 96, give or take a couple as it was very hard to count on the photo shot at an angle.
Thanks,
Mark O Day
