Hello David and Happy Birthday to TC3896!  I've heard lots of stories about sparks flying in TC's but not quite as real as yours Rick,  in rain snow and ice for Halloween this year Michigan

I had the same thing happen with a key fob shorted on the two pin plug. Answer? Remove two pin plug. I haven t any electrics to fry so no damage done.

Exact same thing happened to me Norm!    I bought two new ones because of the burn marks and now they are just there filling the holes and the wiring removed.  Out of sight and under the dash, I have a 12volt Neg. earth cig. lighter type socket, encased in heat shrink and fixed to the side of the toolbox with an insulated 'P' clip.  Wired direct from the battery with an in-line fuse and isolating connecter, it comes in handy for a Sat. As you guys diagnosed, new solid state regulator from Doug Pelton (From the Frame Up) straightened everything out. Battery returned to Summit Racing which was delivered in two days. Both very good companies with terrific service. Thanks all. TC 6424

Howard s failed unit was an original RF95/2 and not a solid state unit. I don t know what the history of the unit is. However, I can tell that is had be refurbished by the adjustment screws which had a new coat of red paint on them which is normally done to see if anyone has tampered with the adjustment.

 

I am a very strong advocate of the new solid state regulators that now have. These are original cores that have had their internals replaced with smart protective circuitry. I recommend using nothing else.

TC is positive ground, the J2 is negative ground, unless the polarity of either one is changed. Diode units are made either way. But you have to order the correct polarity. I am sure Doug can supply you with one or get either one. Interesting to note that I have an MG friend who is an electrical engineer. He built a diode cut out for my J2 without a regulator but fused it at 8 amps. The original 3rd brush was retained to regulate output. It seems to work fine and is safer than the original cut out which can freeze. I will ,when I get around to it, install a unit like Doug sells to replace the 3rd brush.

But you have to order the correct polarity.  I am sure Doug can supply you with one or get either one.  Interesting to note that I have an MG friend who is an electrical engineer. He built a diode cut out for my J2 without a regulator but fused it at 8 amps. The original 3rd brush was retained to regulate output. It seems to work fine and is safer than the original cut out which can freeze. I will ,when I get around to it, install a unit like Doug sells to replace the 3rd brush.

Howard s failed unit was an original RF95/2 and not a solid state unit.   I don t know what the history of the unit is.  However, I can tell that is had be refurbished by the adjustment screws which had a new coat of red paint on them which is normally done to see if anyone has tampered with the adjustment.

 

I am a very strong advocate of the new solid state regulators that now have.  These are original cores that have had their internals replaced with smart protective circuitry.  I recommend using nothing else.
