Re: Digest Number 891
Hi All,
Just reading through some of the threads on steering set up's
etc., as I am running with 600-16 on the rear and 4.50-19 on the front, I
find that this gives some understeer and the steering is still a bit heavy,
this might need a bit of fine adjustment of the toe in though, and I am
reluctant to fit wedges because of the stability problem.
Clive Sherriff mentions that the Avon Tourist's are not up to the job, shame
as I bought apair last year! Are they the wrong compound/pattern?

There is a big danger in all this if you only have the 16s on the front and
19s on the rear cos you will have much better grip in the fornt than the
rear and in an emergency will likely have big problems. Most fit 16s all
round or just on the rear only!!!!
Either way I would not advise Avon Tourist.
You will get much better results using 600 x 16 Avon Turbospeeds
rather than Tourist which are NOT a sports tyre, and they are a tyre
I've had nothing but trouble with over the years when steering and grip
are involved.
Regards
Clive

Ron
I run with that set up except the wedges are in, ( Avon tourists included )
and find it quite satisfactory. Its never going to be as good in terms of
steerability as my Peugeot 206 but I know which car I would rather be in for
fun.

James
I have not changed the toe-in, and run at 25lbs all round. Maybe the
steering would be a little lighter at 29, I will try it and see what
happens.

Rolland:
If you are using a Bishop box you may have adjusted it for the wear in the
straight ahead position. When you turn the steering wheel you go to the unworn
part of the worm and it will bind. The solutiuon is to live with sloppy
steering, replace the worm and peg (I believe Bob Grunau is about to produce
new worms and pegs), or convert to a Datsun box.

Re: Digest Number 891
I thought MG put some sort of stop to prevent you from over turning the
wheels to sharp.
