I sought advice from the List concerning the heavy steering on my TC with its 16in front wheels.
I have received much useful advice which I have followed with reasonable success, namely:
I have ensured that I am running on max pressures; I am using Avon Tourist 16in X 6.00 with a max stated pressure of 29lb.
I have fitted wedges kindly supplied by Ian Thomson; these lightened the steering but at a loss of some directional stability as I was warned.
I was then advised to increase the toe-in. I had used a mimimal toe-in so as not to wear the wide tyres but I was told that it can be increased to about 8mm. I have increased the toe-in to 7mm and this has cured the instability.
In consequence, the steering is much improved with the above set-up.
Does anyone have experience with running on an increased toe-in and does this wear the tyres badly? I am watching out for this but of course it is still early days.

James Mumford

Re: Steering set-up
There is a big danger in all this if you only have the 16s on the front and
19s on the rear cos you will have much better grip in the fornt than the
rear and in an emergency will likely have big problems. Most fit 16s all
round or just on the rear only!!!!
Either way I would not advise Avon Tourist.
You will get much better results using 600 x 16 Avon Turbospeeds
rather than Tourist which are NOT a sports tyre, and they are a tyre
I've had nothing but trouble with over the years when steering and grip
are involved.
