swapping brake drums

I think that one of my brake drums ( after market with cooling fins ) may not be circular anymore. As a result you can feel it dragging when you apply the brakes. One of the other list members suggested that this may be an oval drum. Before I worry about replacing or regrinding I contemplated swapping with one of the other wheels to see if the problem continued. Is this not a good idea? If the drum is out of round (oval instead of round) you will feel it as a pulsing in the brake pedal and jerky stops. If there seems to be a constant non-pulsating drag, it's more likely that the shoes are misadjusted, or are not returning to the full off position due to mechanical or hydraulic problems. This is a perfectly reasonable thing to do for faultfinding though it may prove inconclusive. Remember though that the shoes will have bedded in to the drums so swopping them will upset two brakes until they bed in again. If you must swop them swop them back again afterwards. My experience is that there is always a degree of ovality in old drums, especially orig. T type drums, though I can't speak for the drums which you are talking about here. I just live with it on my cars as long as it does not unbalance the braking. Ian Thomson --------
