Re: Pinion seal
Does someone have the lip seal number that you can use for the front of
the rear end (pinion seal) if you enlarge the opening on the front
cover.

Re: Pinion seal
Dean - if you do this there is room only for a very thin single-lipped seal,
which is not very well held in place. A better idea is sold by Moss: a new
cap in aluminium with a larger seal. I do something similar by fixing an
extension to the cap which holds a double lip seal.

Re: Pinion seal
Thank Roger
I did it to my TC some twenty years ago, so far so good, I just did not
want to take the drive shaft/yoke off to check the number, and I can not
find the number in my records, was hoping someone had done the same and
had the number. Dean

pinion seal
Dear Listers
Has anyone had to replace a pinion seal and, if so, where did you purchase it. I se that Moss sells a new device that includes a lip seal but I wanted to replace the original seal. Any thoughts or advice would be appreciated. Thanks

Re: pinion seal
I have a Moss kit on mine, circa mid-1980's, and it's help up fine.

Re: pinion seal
My Moss pinion seal lets just as much oil out as the old arrangement
did. I had it installed by a professional rear end specialty shop. My
guess is that the flange that bolts to the pinion shaft was either not
round, was off centre, or the rubbing surface was not cleaned up by the
shop. I am of the belief that the seal rides on the pinion to driveshaft
flange.
Moral of the story, do it yourself, check everything, and maybe use a
speedy sleeve.

The trouble is, because the scroll is designed to move oil back into the diff. it also drags in all the dust and grit!!! This can make a mess of the flange boss, not to mention hastening the demise of the bearing of course, the designers knew this, which is why from the TD on, a proper seal was used. > > Years ago I started modifying the original caps to take a double-lip seal, then later saw that Moss did something similar, albeit a new cap made out of aluminium. I doubt that they copied my idea, just a case of parallel invention (much like the tapered half shafts - I did not find out about Phil Marino until I had been making mine for several year). > > So, bottom line: buy a Moss cap, or send your old one to me in England (but don't forget postage!). You will have to pull the complete pinion housing, which could be a blessing in disguise if you find that the front thrust bearing bronze cages are breaking up > > ocTagonally > > Roger > > On 4 May 2010, at 03:11, Fred Renner wrote: > >> Dear Listers >> Has anyone had to replace a pinion seal and, if so, where did you purchase it.
