Morning All. Well I have had a good look at the front plate on the TC and have now posted (or at least with a lot of help from Walter I have had posted) pictures of my spare plate at:- http://www.mg-tabc.org/images/image004.jpg http://www.mg-tabc.org/images/image005.jpg http://www.mg-tabc.org/images/image006.jpg I have included a straight edge to make the problem clear. As you can see the mounting tubes are at different heights which means that when mounted on engine bearers, which are both at the same height, the engine is pushed over to one side. The nearside (UK) of the engine is also low. Forget what I said about the forward facing right angles which support the tubes being twisted to achieve this I was speaking from a (very)faulty memory - I am now somewhat older than when I first looked at it and things are beginning to fail! Ian Re your engine front mounting plates 1.. The two mounting tubes should be equally spaced vertically from the plate bottom line. This is obvious because the two front engine mounts on the chassis are on the same horizontal plane. 2.. I just measured two plates and make the distance from the plate bottom line [i.e. bottom-of-block / top-of-sump-pan horizontal plane] about 2 5/8" 3.. So at least one of your plates appears to be an odd one. 4.. New ones are available from various people. Mark Jablonski recently mentioned the Aussie metal parts maker Kilmartin Automotive Sheetmetal in another thread. I have bought parts from Kilmartin this year and found them to be OK. I would say that front plate is definitely off some other car (but have no idea what car) and not a modified TC plate. While I was able to get to the images from the links on the email I did not find a link on the TABC web site. Getting to the images on the TABC site would be much easier than viewing on the Yahoo site. Will a link on the main page be coming and are we encouraged to post pictures this way? Extra work for Walter I know. And that is a nice picture of Thom Collins, his TC and also Gene Gillman's TC on the Month's Photo David Edgar, TC 5108 El Cajon, California

Please, guyz, this is an easy fix. Just cut the wrong tube adrift (with a hacksaw, or whatever) and reweld in correct position; (oxyacetylene, stick, MIG,TIG or whatever you have). Many years ago, I modified one of these plates, raising the tube to clear a rack & pinion steering shaft for a R & P steering tube ahead of the axle. Easy to put it back. I also have an unmodified plate, and the tubes are certainly straight across (more or less). Don TC 7993

Digitaldon-Oops! Sorry!-digitaldon,Mike, Ian, et al. This must be a really common fault/modification,for I have a TC XPAG front bearer plate with both mounting tubes cut and (extremely inexpertly) shut. I bought it mail-order, sight unseen because I wanted to check the mounting tube alignment of XPAG 2406! (Don't all laugh at once, please!) The tubes of which are nowhere near plumb to the main plate, in fact they are out of plumb in every plane. The rectification of this little witches brew has consumed many waking hours. David, you'll probably need to bolt the plate to yer engine (with the tubes removed), and with the engine in the chassis, line up the crank nut with the badge bar crank handle hole, set the tubes on the motor mounts, tack weld tubes to plate, remove plate, and weld up. tedious, but not a big deal.
