Fuel Sender Unit Bolts

Post by JohnHWSteedman@aol.com » Thu May 16, 2002 3:36 am

Can anyone (preferably in the UK) suggest a source for the 5/32" Whitworth bolts that fix the sender to the tank? I have tried all my usual sources, - Namricks, etc. but with no results. I'm sure there must be some out there somewhere. I know I can raid my Meccano set, but I'd prefer something more professional. John TC 0301 [Non-text portions of this message have been removed]

John, I always get everything like taht from HW Periam Ltd in Birmingham tel +44 (0)121 359 1762 they have fantastic stocks, a trade counter and if you pay cash, no minimum order charge. Failing that, a modelmakers suppliers will almost certainly stock that size of screw ( I used to use Reeves in Birmingham but believe they may have gone out of business) Alan Webster TA 3239

John I think you will find that those screws are 3BA. Regards Dave Dwyer J2, TA, TC

hello John, Dave & the rest of you - we had a thread on this previously (pun unashamedly intended!) and I am as guilty as anyone in stating without actually bothering to double check, that these bolts were 3BA, being led astray by the use of such threads by Lucas. It was actually Walter who measured some screws at 32 tpi - since 3BA is 34.8 tpi and the length to measure is quite short, I just assumed they must be 3BA. WRONG! The almost unheard of 5/32" BSW is 32 tpi, and is only 5 thou less on diameter than 3BA. To prove it, I took a couple out of my sender unit (and of course, petrol came out 'cos there was more than 4 gallons in there) and tried them in a 3BA die: they went in a few turns then tightened right up. Then I took some bolts from my old Meccano set (you colonials are more familiar with Erector, which is a Meccano copy, but uses different threads) and they fitted perfectly in the tank. Since most of the leaks from sender units are probably down the screw threads rather than from the gasket, how about making up some specials with larger heads and putting an "O" ring on for sealing? They are even available in 5/32" size! ocTagonally TCRoger [Non-text portions of this message have been removed]
