Listers,
My starter bit the dust - it turns very slooowly when the starter switch is engaged. Having to remove that blankety blank Datsun Steering Box (grin) so I can remove the starter but when I have it out - and find it's beyond my capabilities to repair - can anyone recommend a Stateside firm that can be counted on to rewind/repair it at a reasonable cost - or should any motor shop be able to do it?
Thanks,

FWIW, in the past 18 months I have had several electrical items serviced
here in South Africa by a Lucas trained electrician for my TC and a
comparison of costs may serve as a useful reminder that the weakness of the
SA Rand against the mighty US dollar has advantages for us locals (current
exchange rate is about USD0.095 to ZAR1.00):
Servicing of generator including turning/replacing of bronze phosphur
bushes: USD 8.12
Complete rebuild of distributor: USD 49.57
Complete rebuild of a spare generator: USD36.93
By way of comparison:
MacDonald's Quarter-Pounder: USD0.95
Bells finest Scotch whisky (750ml): USD8.55.

Before you pull it try using a jumper to a good battery, directly to the starter terminals. Could be old wiring or loose connections. I'm fighting poor connections on my cars.

Starter problems
And remember too that the contacts in the dash ignition switch get furry and sometimes the switch rotates a bit too far to make contact.
Gently return to off and begin the sequence again. It is possible to get a rebuilt switch from my neighbor Craig Seabrook if its needed.
And be certain you have enough 'juice' to turn over. . . And a nice warm lawn mower starter pull can kick too. . . Mine bit my finger last week. . I had stopped the machine and went to collect some debris for disposal and when I went to restart. . Ouchy.
Been there often. . . Sally
