"new" kind of telephone - it had a
round dial on it that spins to get the numbers!
<<>>
Our original still hangs on the wall, circa 1957.

Outhouses
<<>>
Relatives in the country used these. The closest I came was with the
house with the Heatrola. There was a stool in the basement, running
water in the kitchen sink, but no hot water, and no bathroom. I
remember when it was added in 1947.
I could tell about my grandmother getting a refrigerator in 1951 and
still using a coal range. The only other electric appliances she had
were the lights and radio. She had the privey.

Hey Chip, wanna bet? This phone system had hand crank magnetos (ringers)in
the wooden boxes, Walter Winchell style handsets with the side receiver
hooks, and two #6 dry cells, (remember those?), in the basement to bias the
line; (no central office power supply). This was in Black Creek, Ont.
(Canada), just across the Niagara River from a place you never heard of,
called "Buffalo", New York, USA. It snows a lot there, and has a football
team; (Oh, & a hockey team, too, both losers).

Blake:
We still have a Roper gas range, was here when we bought this house years
ago... the first one installed in Albany, in 1939. Because one of the
oven-doors actually conceals a gas heater that keeps that end of the house
warm when it gets really really cold, my wife insisted we keep it. Put in
over 200 hours restoring it, had everything re-porcelained in Seattle, and
it's a wonderful example of "new" not necessarily being better. All things
considered, I've had more fun restoring MG's.
My wife loves to tell friends that the stove is even older than our MG, and
far more reliable.

Sure, they were (are!) bullet proof; but is it the "french" kind, or the
real upright with the side hook for the receiver?

Yeah, but you stayed in shape & had muscular arms instead of muscular
mouths.
