Spark Plug Wires

What is the group's opinion on the best plug wires and connectors to use on the TC? I'm running the stock type setup (Packard stranded wires with Lucas connectors) which has been just fine up to now, but with a few performance enhancements I'd like to try something different to gauge any difference in high-speed running. Moss lists their standard wire (basically what I'm running now) and Bumblebee wire which doesn't list any specs but I suspect it's the same non-shielded copper wire. - Steve Simmons, TC8975

I follow the same line of thought. But with a strange issue I've been trying to diagnose, and old wires and connectors in the car, I figure I have to buy something anyway so why not the best wires I can get? And if I notice no improvement then next time I won't bother. 9.1:1 compression, high top pistons, re-curved distributor, Runbaken oil coil, roller cam, 1.5" carbs (as an experiment, normally 1.25") and an alloy valve cover that almost certainly adds 5HP. ;) - Steve Simmons, TC8975 On 9/16/2015 11:40 AM, phil smith wrote:

Keeping in mind my engine has been slightly built up, the 1.5" carbs do seem to have a bit more power overall. I think it may have been slightly under-carbureted before. My 1.25" carbs are being rebuilt, and when they are done I plan to reinstall and tune them from scratch so I'll have an A-B-A comparison. Over the years OEM spark plug wires have been dumbed down considerably as bean counters vetoed traditional copper wire core because of costs & need for heavy shielding required cope with of RFI & EMI interference in modern engines. The replacement wire cores tend to have hundreds of times more ohms (resistance) than traditional copper core wires. To overcome the high ohm/resistance wire, OEM s have gone to versions of amplified ignition systems needed to push enough currant to the plugs overcoming the resistance. These heavily insulted wires, modern wires are heavily shielded, which negatively impacts being able to use low resistance wire. With non amplified XPAG ignitions, the goal should be to use wires with possible lowest resistance, copper wires if they can be found, or better yet silver core wires seen on some aero engines. Copper & silver wires have virtually nil resistance., Today the best wires composite shielded wires are those from MSD which have MOL 50 ohms/ft resistance. This compares to 3k-20k ohms resistance of today s OEM & aftermarket wires. As our vintage cars do not have

RFI (radio frequency interference) issues -unless an aftermarket audio system has been installed, or EMI (electro- magnetic interference) issues. Using today s high resistance aftermarket wiring w/o an ignition amplifier will lead to poorer ignition performance, especially as higher cylinder pressures are reached.
