throw out bearing

Post by Dean Jensen » Thu Apr 18, 2002 9:59 am

I have had a clutch throw out roller bearing in my TD for 40 plus years, TC 22 years, no problem with either.

I use a roller release bearing because I have a Ford diaphragm clutch and last year it made a grinding noise when fully disengaged and when I opened it up there was plenty of iron dust around. I took the gearbox out for a change (oops!) to make it easier to align and bolt together with both out of the car. When on the bench, it was obvious that the release forks were not central on the shaft because the taper pin (Moss #51) had broken, the forks being located radially OK by key #52. No problem, I'll steal a pin from the basement spares, I thought. However the pin was broken on BOTH spare gearboxes and I know all my gearboxes are original and have never been apart. After searching the shelves for something suitable, I found that a 3 1/2" common nail is a suitable diameter at 0.160" that could be easily tapered down to about 0.154" at one end. A clevis (split) pin would have also done the job. Also a roll pin, but the hardware stores were not open. But why should this pin break? It doesn't appear to have any load on it. Unless, perhaps, if the clutch springs were not properly set so that the release plate was not running true. As the carbon release bearing touched it there may be a sideways component of force and a vibration might start up, eventually breaking it over time. Now, if the release bearing is not centrally aligned with the shaft, one side may want to go slightly faster than the other which is not actually possible, so slip occurs and heat builds up. Sitting a long time at a traffic light in 1st with the clutch depressed would be a likely time. A carbon bearing could stand it, but maybe a roller bearing could overheat and shed its grease. Just a thought, but take a look at that pin next time the engine is out. (For me, that's too frequently!) Cheers, Peter Ross TC 8892, UMG 15. p.s We finished 2nd in our race last Sat to a very nice and famous '50 Healy Silverstone, but then he had 2480 ccs.
