TC tires & seatbelts

Post by George Cheney » Thu Apr 04, 2002 2:16 pm

I've been prepping my TC for the NEMGTR Nova Scotia GOF and have to get new tires. The Dunlops on the car have little tread wear but must be at least 15 years old (I acquired the car last July). Of the US available 19" tires what's best (price & performance)? I'm new to the group and only recently have become reacquainted with TC's. I was about to buy 5 new 4.50-19 Firestones, but thought I'd better get some experienced opinions first. Secondly, what's the current consensus WRT seat belts in MG-TABC's for normal road use? Thanks in advance for your comments, George Cheney __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Yahoo! Tax Center - online filing with TurboTax http://taxes.yahoo.com/

George, Firestones are usually cheaper than Dunlops, plus they wear about 4 times longer and grip the road much better than Dunlops. The tread is deeper and the rubber compound is much more pliable. However, I always use Dunlops. tommm cold in Ashland Ohio

Way to go Terry. I had a nurse friend ask one time if I "liked my face?". If not, she said it would be OK not to wear a seat belt. I thought that was a pretty good point. Doug

George I use 3 point harnesses which restrain me and my passenger at the shoulders and will prevent hitting anything nasty at the front ( wiper motor ugh!) There are enough fixing points down by the rear shock plates and chassis to bring a steel strap to just below the tonneau plywood; a hole through the plywood allows an eyebolt fixing to a piece of steel angle fitted to aforementioned strap and thus provides the rear fixing. Side fixings - 1 through the wheel arch where there is double metal and through a stout metal plate behind, 2 - on the inner side, go through the floorboard and pick up a 1/4 inch metal plate that spans beneath the rear of the tunnel ( eyebolt on each side of tunnel pulls the strap up against the underside of the rear of the tunnel ) The seat belts clip in and can be removed in minutes and the only thing that shows is the eyebolt at the base of the wheel arch and two holes in the tonneau. If you decide to do this and want any further info I could try and photo graph this for you, BTW if you use a tonneau cover you need two leather bound slots just behind the seat for the rear strap of each seat belt. You can get black and coloured straps, mine are black as my interior is also and you need to remove the rather garish labels. I chose a type called Le Mans which is made of a sort of knitted nylon rather than the usual thin shiny nylon. Hope this helps Tony TC9825

I have the Firestones on my TB. They are good wearing with good road holding and a gentle, correctable breakaway. Good tires. Best, Ray
