Re: Clock
In lieu of whale oil, which is no longer used due to it s high degree of
attracting dirt, clock oiling is done using either synthetic or refined
mineral oils. The synthetics work better due to their ability to hold up
for years without attracting dirt. The synthetic oils are expensive (e.g.
$20 for a 4ml size) but will last a life time. I purchased a bottle about
10 years ago and it s almost full despite doing the TC as well as a mantel
clock. In fact the majority of the problems with the TC tachometer,
speedometer and clock is dirt. A good cleaning and oiling is all that is
generally needed. If you want to attempt this, just do a Google search on
clock repair supplies and you will find a large number of suppliers.
Remember you only oil the pivot points, do not oil the gears or springs.
Oh, despite that the clock is electric it s working are mechanical and they
still need cleaning and oiling.
Cleansers are generally ammoniated based, but newer ones use less harsh
chemicals. The best solution for cleaning is to use an Ultrasonic machine.
You may have a local jeweler who would be willing to clean your instruments.
Be careful of the speedometer harsh cleaners can remove the odometer
numbers.
Those interested in more information about the TC instruments and clock,
there are some excellent articles on Peter Forstner s web site.

Re: Clock
Mike, I have found that most of these 60 year old clocks still work.
Most will start when you rotate the hands by setting them to the time.
They seem to need the setting rotation to start. For those that don't
want to start as suggested above, a little careful cleaning and a very
light oil will usually do the trick. Barc

Re: Clock
Thanks for all the amusing responses, however the thread has gone way of from my original enquiry. It seems that many of you have clocks that don't work, or only tell the correct time once per day. Some of you have got your original clocks working using some quite fascinating methods. My problem is that I don't have a movement so whale oil or ships motion wouldn't solve my problem. Also as I live on a very small Greek island, visiting the local Walmart and finding a cheap electronic clock with a suitable movement is difficult. So can I ask my questions in a more specific way:
1) Does anyone know of a battery powered electronic movement that fits that I can buy mail order and have you any suggestions regarding access to replace the battery?
2) Has anyone found a 12v electric automobile movement that fits and is available from the dealers? If so, please can you give me enough details to order by post
3) As an outside chance has anyone got a wind up movement they would sell? I can probably keep it working as our seas are quite choppy out here although I don't think there are any whales in the Aegean.
Thanks in advance and please keep up the amusing emails

Re: Clock
I can't promise and I am not sure but I might have an original spare
movement. If I do, it may be TD rather than TC. This spare( if it is there)
is located in a place that I can not reach easily during the winter. If I do
have one, I am certain that it will need a repair or a cleaning. Remind me
off line in about three weeks.
If I have it, I would be glad to bring it to you in person. Please send
airline tickets , New York (tonight 8 degrees whitworth) to Athens.
Mike.

Lucky you, Jan, we can't buy the Linie akvavit here in Oregon but I
do have a bottle of Aalborg in the freezer. But, of course, it
hasn't been to Australia.

Re: Clock
Hi Bjorn,
I do have a bottle of Linie Aquavit that crossed the equator to
Australia on 6 Jan 1976 and crossed equator again on 21 April 1976 back to
Norway. Since my son is born in 1976 I gave him the bottle. But it is still
in my bar.
Indians like Scotch Whisky than Aquavit. So I do have few Shivas reagal 12
year old full bottles of late 1960's. We drink them thinking of " Lord
Siva". May be it is a mistake but it tastes good. Just like the the TC
inspiration we also got the wihisky taste from the British, during the
colonial times.
But I still remember my great old dead Elephant. But he was a burden during
his last years.
