Temperature Guage
Greetings:
I have a friend working on a TD who wondered if anyone could help him out.
He said: "My temperature guage tube is broken off. There should be alcohol
in this tube before I solder it back together, but I don't know how much to put in it."
I'm still working on my tub, and not close to this kind of problem yet.
Thanks

Re: Temperature Guage
Correct idea but wrong element. They are filled with ether and I doubt a hobbiest has the means. Nisonger Instrument did mine, and a pretty nice job, at around $100. Regards Mark TC8126

I guess John Marks can fix these, also.

Pat:
Actually the "capillary tube" is charged with ether. It should be done by
an expert on repairing instruments, such as Mo-Ma Mfg. in Aluquerque,NM.
That way it can be calibrated correctly.

Dalwhinnie works, but you don't get the same results or taste..........!
You can use a cheaper blended whisky, but I don't recommend it....

Hey Ray:
I like that Talisker; expect to try it, & see if one can't get a closer
calibration.

Temperature guage
Listers,
Can the temperature gage be calibrated?
I currently have 3 temp gages and when placing the sender head in boiling water each provides a slightly different reading. Some instruments have an adjustment screw for final adjustment. I would like to install an accurate gage.
It is easy enough to determine altitude, within a few feet, via GPS and Barometric pressure via AWOS to adjust the gage to Celcius under current conditions.
Thanks in advance, oh learned ones.

Re: Temperature guage
Sherwood I do not think those gauges were that sophisticated, I would
think you would actually remove the needle and place it where you want
it. By the way I have a TC type Water temp gauge as well as 2 TC type
oil temp gauges I wish to sell. they are working and faces are in nice
shape.. If anyone is interested contact me off list. I can ship US and
Internationaly

Temperature Guage
Thanks to all that offered advice with my gauge problem. I followed some good advice and tried the sensor in boiling water. No reading so I guess the problem is in the gauge.
Next question: Can it be repaired? If so how?

Re: Temperature Guage
Jim,
The gauge has what is known a Bourdon tube. It is filled with ether that
expands when heated and straightens a coiled tube to make the needle move.
Yours has leaked the ether out, rendering it useless. The tube generally
has to be replaced with a new one, properly filled with ether, then sealed.
It is a job for an instrument specialist, not one that lends itself to us
amateur mechanics.
I have used Mo-Ma in Albuquerque in the past. I have heard West Valley
Instruments in California and The Whitworth Shop (Craig Seabrook of this
list) are excellent also.
Cheers,
