Oil pickup strainer
Hi Folks - I enjoy reading as many of your inputs as time will allow - thanks to all you contributors. Now I have a question: In the process of improving oil delivery on my racing TC engine, I have bought a TF sump and pickup, but it has no strainer and neither Moss nor Abingdon carry them. Does anyone know of a source please? Alternatively, it doesn't look difficult to make one, but does anyone know of a source for the fine brass gauze? What kind of vendor should I try? Alternatively I could leave it out since I only use the engine for racing and change the oil and filter very frequently (about every 10 hours). But then again, a thorough cleaning of all the oil ways after the last oil-surge failure showed no presence of bearing material in the engine, but there was tons in the sump and in the filter. The fact that material was in the filter implies that the gauze strainer, which was a perfect TC one at the time, did not keep out all very visible metal bits. The gauze only really protects the oil pump gears from chunks. On a related topic, does anyone have ideas for a baffle to keep the oil up front when accelerating out of tight corners. Currently my plans are for a vertical plate with about 1/4 inch gap at the bottom as described in an MGVR technical bulletin. Thanks for your help Peter Ross ps. AT&T bought our local ISP/cable company and have just changed our email address to boltonmg@attbi.com. I have changed the lists.

Peter:
Suggest you call Small Parts Inc. (1-800-220-4242) and request their astonishing catalog. Among the thousands of fiddlely-bits they offer are small sheets of meshes in several materials (304 stainless, polypropylene, polyester, nylon) in an amazing range of weaves all the way down to 38 microns opening (approx. .0015"). Surely they have a piece of mesh suitable for you to fabricate the oil filter strainer to your preferences.

Peter I had made a Baffle many years ago for my TD it consists of a steel plate that goes across the pan, I left about 1 inch clearance around the sides and bottom with a few 1 inch holes in it but left the center of the plate solid and it was bolted to the existing steel tray. You know that the TF had an aluminum scoop on its pick up that was to prevent the problem you are having.

Thanks Joe, The TF aluminum scoop is available from me if anybody wants it. I use the TF oil pan and standard TF oil pickup and scoop on my race TC and so far ( touch wood ) , after 4 years racing, I have not had an oil pressure surge problem. I did not add any baffles to the pan. They seem to have a web page: http://www.smallparts.com/SPI%20Intro%20Home.htm Go to their products catalogs, Full Line Catalog and then to "M" to locate their mesh products. Quite interesting.
