Windscreen to scuttle top rubber

Post by tonygoodall » Mon Mar 11, 2002 2:58 pm

Has anyone been able to obtain from UK suppliers, the correct section for the rubber seal which fits into the base of the windscreen. I have obtained this section from 2 sources and they have a) been too thick to slide into the groove (I actually ground it down to make it thinner! ) and b) they have not been long enough on the leg of the tee to lie correctly on the scuttle top. I have managed to find a section at a local rubber suppliers which will fit the screen, but it is still too narrow. Anyone been there recently? Tony TC9825

Thanks Carl I checked with your stores today, they advised me that the front to back dimension of this section was 47mm. This is what I currently have on my TC and I do not believe it is correct. The section I removed because it was cracked was nearer 60mm and lay in a much better way on the scuttle top. Previous ones, I seem to remember were also of this width (60mm). I am still trying to source a 60mm section (2.5 ")rather than the narrower one. I have not yet checked the other source which was mentioned. BTW, talc is a lot less messy than washing up liquid! I recently replaced one, with the rubber supplied by Moss Motors, USA (280-290). I don't know about the length (front to back) dimension of 47mm being correct or not, but it is what I have been installing over the years. However, the "T" section, that fits into the windshield frame, has either gotten thicker over the years, or the platers nowadays are building up the plating too much in this area. I never had so much trouble installing this piece of rubber before. Next installation, I will try rubber from Abiungdon Spares, to compare cross-section. John Seim Irvine, CA

Digitaldon has an NOS windshield seal he's been hoarding for many years (since the 60's), obtained from the BMC North American parts depot (previously Morris Motors) in Hamilton Ontario. This would presumably be about as authentic as this part gets. It measures 50 mm wide, T-section is 8 mm thick, the web tapers from the T side-3 mm thick to about 2.5mm' and is 115.5 cm long.
