Garage Help Needed

[Badger]

The Badger lives on a postage stamp sized lot of only 10,000 square feet or less than a quarter of an acre in a "U"-shaped house that he designed and built. It includes stabling for up to 8 or 9 cars plus a tidy workshop, equipped with a lift, lathe, drill press, air compressor, equipment for both gas and mig welding, facilities for buffing, grinding, cleaning, and of course, plenty of workbench space, shelving, and handtools. Of paramount importance is a separate parts room lined with large sturdy shelves and open areas as a place to store the inevitable accumulation of spare parts, dismembered cars, and general crap to prevent this dross lying around in one's other two areas. The arrangement of the building is such that, from the street, one enters a central brick-paved courtyard located between the two "legs" of the "U" through a porte-cochere secured by iron gates where a half a dozen or so more cars can be comfortably kept if need be. Within and around the courtyard area, there are several mini gardens of espaliered fruit trees, perennials, bamboo, and pine but NO grass as the Badger despises yard maintenance. Previous to this, the Badger owned an enormous and exquisite brick carriage house of some 12,000 square feet, 8000 of those feet were exclusively for his collection of 40 - some odd motorcars while he and his badger family lived above in the remaining 4000 square feet (with 18 foot ceilings!). From this experience, the Badger would caution against any arrangement which includes a living space located over a garage space as the odors of lacquer thinner, gasoline, exhaust, and so on tend to find their way upstairs, even through closed and sealed doors, and, in my case, the resultant complaints from Mrs Badger caused the arrangement to become undesireable to say the least. Also, the space was actually too large, for this particular badger anyway who finds the natural restraints imposed by his current garaging beneficial in curbing his automotive acquisitional habits. The Badger has always purchased his tools from places like Sears and Napa or at yardsales and NEVER from Griots Garage or Brookstone.

My car collection is housed under the 450 square foot house where we live; the multiple decking needed to allow 14 cars to be stored in 450 sq. feet is made of discarded packing cases arranged ala Badger, and secured with used, straightened nails. Thank goodness for 35 foot ceilings. Our 2500 bottle wine collection is stored in the cars. I think that the reds work best in the post war cars, with whites in the pre-war. It keeps the pre-war cars turning over since the whites go off more quickly. Best Regards, Ray "Wooden spoon anyone?"
