Tie Rod Ends

Post by Gene Gillam » Wed Feb 27, 2002 7:33 pm

The photo showing the VW steering conversion in the April 1999 issue of the Sacred Octagon (I have a scan of the article if anyone is interested) shows a tie rod end on the end of the drag link tube instead of the drag link ball and socket arrangement normally used. Does anyone know what this modification entails, i.e., part numbers, machining, etc? Thanks in advance, Gene Gillam "Always in search of better steering " --- Outgoing mail is certified Virus Free. Dear Group My TC#4970 has a sizeable play in the front end and it seems certain that the tie rods need adjusting and or replacing. My quetion is whether They can be adjusted and if not can one purchase rebuild kits or is it necessary to replace the unit[s].In the event of replacing any suggestions ?Moss or Abington.Thanks. Fred, The tie rod ends do adjust. Remove cotter, tighten end plug all the way down and then back off a half turn, to nearest cotter pin alignment. You may also want to check inner parts for wear. Also make sure balls are attached firmly to arms. Now that sums up the end joints but if you have loose steering that is just the tip of the iceberg. If steering is still loose after tie rod adjustment, check toe-in, steering box adjustment, steering box mounting, king-pins, pitman arm to sector shaft fit, spring bushings, wheel bearings, and the list goes on. Hope all goes well and puts you back on the road again, David Edgar, TC 5108 El Cajon, California

A friend fitted them to a TA some years ago and found the car virtually undrivable - all over the road unless the surface was dead smooth. We concluded that the set up needs that little bit of spring motion on the original balls to take out some of the road shocks. I helped him refit his original ball joints ----Original Message---- From: robbut@onetel.com Date: 04/02/2009 17:37 To: mg-tabc@yahoogroups.com> Subj: [mg-tabc] Tie Rod ends Anyone use rose joints instead of original tie rod ends and drag link?...Bob Wales UK @-1C . 50% off Norton Security 2009 only from Tiscali - http://www.tiscali.co.uk/security _____________________________ [Non-text portions of this message have been removed]

I fitted them to my TC with a VW steering box. Steering feel was improved and I no longer had to worry about those fiddly little bits in the stock system suddenly coming undone! Tie Rod Ends

Does anyone have a part number for modern 5/8-20 tie rods ends that fit the TC? I need to replace mine but there are no identifying numbers on them. In days of old I would simply hand them to the guy manning the parts counter at our local auto parts store, but these days they go by the rule "if it isn't in the computer then it doesn't exist". - Steve Simmons, TC8975

Doug Pelton has these tie rod ends.  They are well manufactured and a perfect replacement.  Do not replace one without the other.

Thanks, but I'm looking for a modern replacement part, not the original style.  With a Datsun box and replacement-type rod (5/8 thread), it makes sense to replace with the same modern type as is on there now.  More precise steering and a fraction of the cost of original types. Lots of off-line replies, but no one seems to have a part number.  I guess I'll have to raid the local Napa, armed with measuring tools. - Steve Simmons, TC8975 On 9/29/2014 6:34 AM, 'Peter Roberts' mgtc@comcast.net [mg-tabc] wrote:
