Thanks to all who responded. I have a source for caps and with all of the comments and suggestions now have a good idea of what to look for and how to proceed (very carefully!)

Main Bearing Caps

Post by BUD SILVERS » Sun Dec 30, 2007 6:54 am

Hello all; I have acquired a TC (xpag) block which is missing the main bearing caps. Does anyone have a set from a junk block that you would sell? Contact me off list if you do. I am aware of the machining necessary to make them work. I have located a front main bearing cap, but am missing the other two and would still buy a set of all three. Thank you. Main bearing caps

Hi all, Does anyone have a spare set of main bearing caps for a XPAG they are willing to sell? My spare block only has the rear one, so only need the centre and front, but am willing to buy the full set. I wonder what happened to them over the previous 30 years? Regards, Ron Benson (windy N. Yorkshire) [Non-text portions of this message have been removed]

Ron, I have a set I'll pull of an old block if you need. Block has a good sized hole out the side and I don't think I want to repair it. Chip Hellie

Ron, et al, As you may or may not be aware you are unlikely to be able to just put the "new" caps in as were line bored as a set and so make each engine cap alignment unique (same applies to con rods). Shaving off say 0.050 inch from all 3 caps and getting a good machine shop to rebore in line again will probably cure any mismatching. Clive Oxford UK ================================

The caps can be shiffed sideways by filing one side and adding metal to the other to get the cap more or less lined up with the block crank bore. Remove dowel pins. Then line bore. If the rear aluminum oil slinger is in place at the back of the block, the line bore can bring the original slinger hole back to standard size so the scroll on the crankshaft can do a reasonable job of keeping oil in the engine. I think radial clearance to the crank scroll should be 0.002" or less.
