TC Chassis
Hi, Ian-
Could you explain a little about what you are up to, needing a chassis? If you are building a special, or doing a ground-up and require a better frame, or what?
In any case, I would recommend you find a good used one via someones basket case rebuild. There are cars that turn up that have good parts, including frames, but have poor bodies. I would think you would be miles ahead of attempting to build your own. TC frames are generally not that prone to rust when compared to Healeys and TR's, for example.
I have also occasional seen frame rails for sale, you then obviously need both handed sides. But a rolling basket should be the easiest route- unless it would be sacrilegiously sacrificing another car from the rolls.

TC Chassis
I am in the process of repairing my folded, bent and mutilated TC chassis. To do this I need to get it apart. I have removed the rivets from the rear spring hangers but cannot get them off the side chassis rails. It appears that there is a heavy walled tube running right across and through the chassis and is held in place by two forged flanges which the rivets go through. My question is how do you get the flanges off the tube? They appear VERY tight and maybe were heat shrunk onto the tube when the chassis was assembled and cannot be removed. Any help would be appreciated and leads in locating a good chassis would be even better.

Re: TC Chassis
Hugh
I thought they were pinned onto the tube, but I just went out and looked at
the flange that I know I removed: there's no trace of a pin.
It's probably just rust that's holding the flange. Try the oxy torch.

Re: TC Chassis
Hugh
If I am following you correctly, the outer flanges will come off, but
the inner ones are not only pinned but are silvered or brazed onto the
tube. You can take the tubes off, if you take all of the other cross
members off at the same time, or just take one side of the frame
completely off, if that would help. Cheers Dean

TC chassis
Just curious, was someone reproducing the TC chassis?
I have built some Morgan reproduction chassis, but lots of people do them. The Morgan chassis rust away being made essentially of sheet metal. The TC chassis is quite a bit stouter.

Re: TC chassis
Reproducing a TC chassis faithfully is not that difficult a task and nor for that matter would most of the MMM chassis be either. I'd wager though that there are still enough serviceable ones still around not to bother. I know of the hanging on the wall of a hanger at a nearby light aircraft field.... Just a matter of going and getting them.

Re: TC chassis
Steve,
Not only is the metal much stouter, the TC frame has some curves that would be harder to reproduce and some forgings and is mostly riveted together. In comparison the Morgan chassis is dead simple.

Re: TC chassis
Agreed, I spent quite some time wire brushing old paint and surface rust from every inch of the chassis of TC2911 and also had a chance to slightly straighten it a tad. It was one stout piece of steel compared to that of a Morgan. But I must say I did enjoy building a new chassis for my Morgan and a couple more for projects I was involved with at the time.Steve

I have built some Morgan reproduction chassis, but lots of people do them. The Morgan chassis rust away being made essentially of sheet metal. The TC chassis is quite a bit stouter. Steve TC 2911

Re: TC chassis
I wouldn'y know about the morgan, but don't forget the TC has the factory fitted Xpag oil leak chassis protection system to help preserve the chassis, though some owners have tried to remove the system.Mike TB0457

Steve, Not only is the metal much stouter, the TC frame has some curves that would be harder to reproduce and some forgings and is mostly riveted together. In comparison the Morgan chassis is dead simple. Charles Hill On 1/9/2015 6:39 PM, Stephen D Stierman morgan7709@sbcglobal.net [mg-tabc] wrote:

Re: TC chassis
There is at least one company in England that builds them on order. One of the local TC owners here bought one to replace the one in his car which had a bad twist in it. The twisted frame is now in a barn waiting for some unsuspecting person to find and use it to restore a TC some time in the future. There is also at least one custom metal shop here in the us that will build them on order. None of them are cheap. In addition to new ones companies like Abingdon Spares in New England can provide original frames and frame parts from cars that have been broken on an "as available" basis.
