MG TC # 6741 First Motion Shaft Quest

Post by LuckyFloridaLin@aol.com » Wed Jan 30, 2002 6:33 pm

Dear Lads and Lassies; Pulled out the engine and tranny to find out what was causing that Squalling noise and gear shifting problems. I think I have a major problem.. The pilot bushing backed out and stuck in the middle of the clutch. The transmission input shaft( aka first motion shaft) now has a worn ring about 1/2 inch wide , also in the middle of the shaft. Does any one have a replacement, or can any one repair this shaft? All Al Moss has, is a shaft for the TD/ TF, and wished me good luck in my quest. The gearing inside the tranny is in good condition. Their is only 2500 miles on this engine since Zero Time Re-Build. Horrido! Thom Collins

Thom Find an electric motor repair company. They will have a process for building up the end of the shaft - I think it's metal spraying, but I'm not sure. This is a common repair required to electric motors. We had exactly this work done on our J2 about 20 years ago, and it's still fine. The process can also be used to build up worn housings - recently we had the end plates for the J2 dynamo repaired to remove slack in the bearing fit. Regards Dave Dwyer J2, TA, TC

Thom a good machine shop can turn down the end and press on and loctight on a hardened bushing and grind/turn to size. Metal spraying is a good idea but if it is done wrong it can peel and you still have to have it turned/ground, you could always have the machine shop turn down the end and make an oversize bushing of oillite if shaft is not to worn. The shaft end only turns in that pilot bush when the clutch is depressed (not unlike poor Mr. Farthing) Joe

You might contact James Perman 460 Prayer Spring Road Stratford, CT 06614 (203)375-6095 Jim has a machine shop and is in the process of rebuild on my J2 motor & transmission. I think I had a similar problem with a shaft in the J2 Trans which is undergoing a chrome process buildup and then machine down to proper size - James has done this before. Carlyle Merritt
