Onto the next question - many of the chassis rivets on TC0279 are loose. Replace them with new rivets, or reset them to snug them down? Tom Wilson

Dear All,

 

I must be very lucky; I just stripped TC2401 and sent the chassis to Cleaning Consultants in Ifold, W. Sussex for blasting there were no loose rivets and the left box section had been protected over the years by the accumulation of oil soaked grit thank goodness for leaking engines !

 

The whole chassis seems to be in good condition and doesn t look bent or twisted although I have yet to make the definitive measurements.

 

The good news is that the chassis is now ready for collection and having made radical improvements to my garage (new roof, sealed and painted walls, floor screed) it just remains to paint the floor and I will be ready to start the re-assembly work. I have also erected a 9 x 3m gazebo in front of the garage to accommodate all the equipment and TC parts.

 

Since joining the forum last year I have learnt more about the car than in the last 20 years so thanks to you all.

That's more of a problem. Any movement at all will cause wear and enlargement of the holes.  I understand the rivet holes and rivets are precision tapered to prevent any movement.  This could bring some interesting chatter from those knowledgable!

I would suggest that you ring Russell Truman in Bradford, Yorkshire who rebuilds chassis' for a living - and a superb job he makes. He used to work for Rubery Owen who I believe originally (or at some stage) made the T chassis. He is a very easy person to talk to - if you can understand his broad Yorkshire accent. When faced with having to take the frame apart for repair of an old repair (inherited), I elected to put back with allen, Button-head cap screws and Die or Stripper screws, also allen-headed, that a friend turned down to simulate a rivet head (black RTV will fill the void). The rivets had to be drilled down the center to give the material somewhere to go, after chiseling the heads off and then drifting them out! Jan/Cincinnati

Hello Rog, and all. As I discovered a few yonks ago when sniffing out rivets for headlight bowls, the Rivet Supply Co. was bought out/taken over by these characters. http://www.sapphireproducts.co.uk/ Seem to have bags of stock but you have to send a sample or provide dimensions. Rivets were traditionally heated prior to insertion, then as they were hammered the body expanded to give a tight fit in the hole.
