floating axles

Post by Michael DeRentz » Fri Dec 14, 2001 5:48 pm

Ben, There are definitions in the glossary of the Autobooks manual for the T Series. I hesitate to reprint them here because they are copyrighted. My understanding is that in the 3/4 floating design(TABC) no vehicle weight is carried by the half shaft and that the 3 ton press fit of the shaft into the hub provides some lateral stability. In this case the hub rides on a bearing inside the axle casing. In a 1/2 floating (semi-floating ) design the half shaft itself rides in a bearing inside the axle casing and thus takes some vehicle weight. I have seen somewhere a definition which states that a fully floating arrangement is similar to 3/4 except the half shaft is not press fitted into the hub. Disclaimer! I am writing this not because I know what I'm talking about, but that someone who does will correct me! Michael DeRentz
