Bob TC4956 Actually I think you are all missing the point about the PB crowd. The finger of responsibility should be pointed at those who judge....... If the judges awarded "correctly" restored cars as apart from the one with the most chrome then surely the Chrome Tarts would disappear.......

Fw: [mg-tabc] Over Restoration semantics
" Beauty is in the eye of the beholder " ! Many "dumb and tacky" movies make millions and have " crowd appeal ". Many " intelligent and tasteful " ones die at the box office. Mirror finish paint and extra chrome are popular with those with " monkey syndrome ". A " proper " MG TABC is like " quiet money " ... just an opinion. Cheers, Johnny ( also a frustrated actor ) TB # 0398 ( apart for TOO long so it can return to original spec. after brutal " renovations " by PO's who once abused the poor car )

Re: Over Restoration semantics
"Chrome Tarts" are a world-wide affliction. During the '70's, a lot of these cars were poorly "restored" by folks in their native land. Lots of non-original parts were ladeled onto the cars (electric screen heaters on a '36 TA), and cars in truly poor condition were pawned off on enthusiasts. I know; I was one! Americans were told that they were "over restoring" the cars when they looked for original parts and put on nice paint. Personally, I can't see doing to most cars what is done to the PB cars...after all, these were essentially middle class fun-mobiles. If they were originally created as a sort of art-piece, ala Talbot-Lago in the '30's, that would be one thing, but they were not. Besides, you can't really use a Talbot-Lago except as a dust catcher. Best, Ray

Re: Over Restoration semantics
The topic has been beat to within an inch of it's life, MG guys are not the only ones with these problems, I have had contact with a fellow who has a genuine documented 100 M Factory Healey, had it for 40 years and is going to have chassis fixed by a specialist who is going to make it stronger, better and he is going to do this with the use of round tubing not square as was factory, now I and a few others have warned him of the impending disaster, in value of the car and that he is ruining a piece of history, and you know what in the end he is the owner, I cannot force him to do something against his will. I heard years ago that Ralph Lauren changed the color of his Buggatti Type 57 Atlantic(?) which upset the world of Buggattis, well it was his car and while I do not propose a mustache on the Mona Lisa, but within reason we cannot police these people.
The idea of making the judging partially responsible is an interesting one, I have had interesting situations with the Jaguar crowd along those lines
There is also another term called Conservation, this applies to the repair of parts and whole cars as opposed to Restoration, another thing is that the term Restoration is thrown about very loosely, I have had fellows describe a brush paint job and tin cans welded to the floor as a restoration.
