Off the subject but do a google search on Gene Ponder and you will come up with a youtube video about Gene's  very nice collection of vintage iron.  I also recall selling him an item of my own on ebay awhile back and had a conversation or two with him or whoever represents him. Steve TC2911

I have a like new radiator shell for a TD that will also fit a TC.  It is complete with the nose and medallion.  It is currently located to Pennsylvania, so it would not be available until May.  It is in perfect condition and I will sell it for less than the cost of a good rechrome.  Contact me off list if interested. So joe and everybody - when did the back edge of the chrome radiator surround change from flat to corrugated? I have factory photos showing both but have been unable to find an approximate date. My guess is the change was made for strength. I also have a neat photo showing the saw table used to cut off the scarf at the back edge of the surround after it was pressed. Always wondered how they kept a consistent thickness of metal in the finished pressing. Tom Wilson

Sorry my mistake, I read it on the cell phone, but did not see it was a repro being offered. Keep the faith, someone will have just the right one to offer. Good luck.....

Attachments :I guess I have a reproduction of the surround. It's still in the box and wrapped in newspaper from 1980. It has the round hole but I think it's brass, it's definitely not steel as it's not magnetic.. It came with my basket case car but I used the original for my restoration. I've never tried to fit it, where are the problems?

The problem with those repros that came out in the 70's is that the bonnett top will not fit nicely to the curvature of the repro shell, and  some of the surround metal work feels a bit uneven.  If you are not sure if it's the real McCoy, my suggestion is fit yours up and see how the bonnett looks especially at the curve.  There was a ton of these shells made in the 70's and they are still floating around, probably more common in the open market and up for sale more frequently then the originals.  Nobody wants them, and nobody wants to trash them, so they will be around for along time to come.   Seeing a picture on ebay is not going to reveal much, if anything.  A close friend of mine was the distributor of these shells, and honestly, he did not know the problem with them until he received a boat load  of nasty letters.  He tried fixing the problem with the manufacturer, but the decision to fix it was to cease production.

My suggestion, if you have an original shell, though it may be beat up, find a pro that can weld and fix it.  Members of this group are more than willing to share info about those that are excellent at their craft.

Hi Tom, It seemed to me that the corrugations were needed to shrink the edges which are set inwards from the main body of the shell and thus need to be contracted. However, you are quite correct; the corrugations would make the edges stiffer. I'm not sure the thickness is consistent as quite a bit of stretching would take place during the forming process, resulting in thin areas around some corners. Unfortunately these are the same corners which tend to be over-polished by some platers. Regards, Eric. ________________________________________ From: [twilson@indy.rr.com] So joe and everybody - when did the back edge of the chrome radiator surround change from flat to corrugated? John your pictures did not come out , but if you look at the repro shell they are more rounded in the areas where a original one is angular, and they have more of a "gum drop" shape   Joe -----Original Message----- From: John & Barbara point@gulftel.com> To: 'Sara Dahl' ssdmgtrio8@yahoo.com>; 'garthp.nj' garthp.nj@gmail.com> Cc: colin colin@liveseywoodwork.co.uk>; mg-tabc mg-tabc@yahoogroups.com> Sent: Sat, Jan 26, 2013 3:34 pm Subject: RE: [mg-tabc] Re: Radiator Surround   I guess I have a reproduction of the surround.
