I have heard of and used this method. I have not found it to ever make much difference. The main think that you have to watch out for is adding the water too fast. If too much gets into a cylinder you can bend a connecting rod or much worse. Check your spark plugs and use a gas additive or a couple of tanks of premium fuel is my suggestion.

To all: Actually, there is a way to decarbonize the engine without removing the head. At any GM dealer, pick up a can of Top Engine Cleaner. It actually has a GM part number. It comes in a regular pour can, and as an aerosol for side draft carbs. Follow the directions and the carbon is gone. It is a solvent that you dribble or spray into the carbs with the motor running. Huge clouds of grey smoke come out of the tailpipe. Toward the end of the process, you drown the engine with it, let it sit for a few minutes, and then start it up. More clouds of smoke and the job is done. This stuff really works. I have used it for many years. The can size is designed for V-8's, so you won't need it all to do a 4 cylinder engine. I have fitted a simple water injector to my TD to go along with the Supercharger and when I had the head off to change the gasket, the combustion chamber had virtually no carbon deposits in them, so this old fashioned accessory still works. For my 2 cents worth on unusual consumption of aero engines, one of the old timers here in town told me of how he fitted an Allision V12 to a speed boat, not so unusual a swap but the fellow who had him do it bought a P38 surplus out of Arizona, never saw the aircraft, shipped both engines to New York, scrapped the counter rotating one and left the A/C to scrap, he later fitted a Merlin to the boat and he said the windows would rattle when he cracked the throttle. Dear Skip; Had the distinct pleasure and honor of being brought to small locked hanger at McGuire AFB ,handed a box lunch as they opened the door for me,put on the lights and there was a fully restored P-38 Lightning. For one incredible half hour I lived one of my dreams all by myself. A month later the P-38 was placed on a Pylon in the center of McGuire AFB. Still have some of the memoribilia of the dedication.
