radiator shells
Jim has painted his 'slats' the colour of the upholstery and just to be different he also painted the underfender areas also.
He in fact used Rustoleum because it was easy to repaint when stones chipped it away. We had a TD in the 50's with this scheme and when he worked on the current TC he again painted the undersides red with the Cream body. . . . really sharp. Pictures available. . . . .Sally

Radiator Shells
Hello all;
My question today is about radiator shells. I am well aware that there is a
difference between TC radiator shells and TD radiator shells, and that a TD
radiator shell will fit on a TC. I am also aware that the noticeable
difference is in the crank hole. The TC shell not having a bottom to the
hole and a TD shell having a bottom (full circle).
My question is if the TD shell is more pointed at the bottom or exactly the
same. I am also wondering if the TA and TB radiator shells were identical to
the TC radiator shells.
If there are differences between the TC shell and the others aside from the
bottom hole, then what are those differences?
I have a TC in my shop with a TD radiator shell and it seems to protrude
about of an inch further forward at the very bottom center than my TC
shell. The other odd thing is that I had to add a spacer between the
fender support bracket (The part that passes through the side of the
radiator. Not the part that the headlight sits on.) and the support bracket
that passes on the inside of the radiator (from side to side). Had I not
added the spacer then the bolts would not line up. As it is I had to use
slightly longer bolts.
Any ideas would be appreciated.
Have a great day.

Re: Radiator Shells
I have one of each Bud and they look exactly the same except for the lack
of support in the TC version. I can be convinced to take a few pictures of
that area on each type if you or anyone wishes.

Re: Radiator Shells
Hi,
I have interchanged the TC and TD shells among each other, and have had as many as 4 shells of both types for comparison.
Except as where you have noted, they appear the same. Some flexing from previous repairs may add differences, and some time back there
were reproduction shells, (I had one) that were not quite right, especially when using an original medallion nose piece. The bonnet also seemed to leave a gap where it closes at the top. Originals don't have this issue, at least with the ones I have encountered.
The TD shells , due to the increased strength at the bottom, hold up better in my opinion. Only experts such as that found on this list will ever notice the difference.
Hope this helps, Lee Jacobsen, Dearborn, MI TA2969 Tickford (with a TD shell)

Hello again all;
What I really want to know is if there is a difference between TA, TB, and
TC shells?
Why did I have to add spacer on the fender bracket (again I am talking
about the small piece that protrudes through the side of the radiator).
Thanks.

Re: Radiator Shells
Hi,
On the TA, TB, and TC headlamp brackets, if I remember correctly, it was easy to turn them around the wrong way. The bracket should line up without a spacer.
The bottom large fender support brackets are easy to confuse as well. The Shells should all be the same at the bracket area.

Bud,
The only thing I can think of is that something is wrong with either
your radiator or shell. In my limited experience, I never had a problem.
Maybe I was lucky.
