I got my '49 TC back together again after replacing the clutch.
Everything works fine. The clutch works better than it ever did
before. I now suspect it was bad when I bought the car. I don't have
any other TC driving experience to compare so I didn't know. It now has
a much lighter pedal and the whole "feel" is much better.
While everything was out, I decided to fix a few other things. I took
of the cast aftermarket valve and tappet covers and put on the original
stamped steel pieces. I have a question about installing the tappet
cover. The gasket I bought from MOSS is the same as the one that was on
the car. The gasket covers the whole area of the tappet galley with 4
vent holes. The only problem is that it seems like the gasket blocks
off the road vent tube. It seems to me that if the road vent tube is
restricted, crankcase pressure would be able to build up and agrivate
any existing oil leak problems. Should I cut the gasket to clear the
vent tube? I would appreciate any comments/suggestions.

Use the gasket as is. It acts as a baffle between the tappet chamber and the breather. Without it you'll lose oil out the breather tube at a rapid rate. -- Chip Old 1948 M.G. Re: TC Tappet cover gasket
I agree with Chip. The four vent holes in the gasket allow the block to vent
to the outside of the gasket and therefore indirectly to the vent tube. A
small projection on inside end of the vent tube keeps the gasket from
plugging the opening. A direct hole in the gasket will encouage oil leaking
out the vent.
