running problem?????
OK all of you xpag gurus I have a problem for you. A good friend has a TD (I
know but same engine as the TC) that starts and runs fine. As long as you are
moving it seems to run fine. Stop for a stop sign or traffic light or let it
idle in the driveway it will quit just like someone turned off the ignition.
It does not sputter like it is running out of fuel but just stops. It will
then start right up just like nothing happened. It has new plugs, points,
condensor, rotor, wires, and cap. We are totaly mystified. Any and all ideas
greatly appreciated. I feel it is electrical but have no clue where.
HELP!!!

I would check out the ignition switch. It could have an intermitent short,
to the point where it unshorts when you move the tumblers to restart.

Try opening both jets about 3 or 4 flats, and I'll bet the problem goes
away. (I had the exact same problem, and that cured it for me.....the jets
were set a little too closed at idle.)

Re: running problem?????
Check the setting of your idle stop screws on the the butterfly rod
(throttle shaft). I have in the past encountered the situation where I set
the idle screws on SUs properly when doing a tune-up but, the little springs
on the screws had lost their "springiness" with the result that the screws
soon backed out from vibration while running and the butterflies would then
close completely at idle and the engine of course died immediately. So,
check those little springs.
Press on regardless.

MG friend had a similar situation. Each time the gasoline tank went below the level of the SU Carbs it would cause this problem when he made a sharp left turn. It would not start until the engine cooled off. Tally Ho! Thom Collins

Is there a possibility the ignition system is running off the generator
and not the battery due to a regulator problem or a broken wire
somewhere? When the generator is at idle the cut-out opens and
shuts off the juice.....Opinions ??

Re: running problem?????
This would not account for it starting right back up again. As I
recall they were able to restart the car without problem. I have no
other guess except I would research the fuel angle more even though
it does shut down quickly.

Re: running problem?????
I have had simirar "sudden death" phenomenon with my TC6903. The engine
would just stop when the car is cruising at a good speed on motorways. It
happened first in a tunnel, second time before a toll gate. Very annoying.
The engine would re-start in ten or so minutes however and that left me
puzzled as I could not find out why. The mystery was solved when the engine
stopped right on a 2-km long toll bridge during a rally. Most annoying.
Everybody came rushing at me and an engineer friend of mine noticed when he
touched the ignition coil it was very hot. A quick check showed that the
coil was not functioning so we borrowed a Bosch coil somebody was carrying
as a spare and the dear old TC was back on the road and finished the rally.
We have figured out that the deteriorating insulation(oil?) inside the coil
would break down as the temperature rises due to the driving condition plus
the atmospheric temp. and restore itself as it cools down, resulting the
strange on-off of the ignition system, The coil was a Lucas. But what can
we say but a thank-you to a fifty year old part that had been working
honestly in his place for (I assume) such a long time.

Re: running problem?????
The suggestion that the coil could be failing due
to overheating seems quite probable. At low RPM
the coil's average current increases due to the fewer
interruptions to the current caused by the contact
breaker's opening. The increase in current results
in the coil heating up, expanding and somehow this
produces a broken connection.
However, it's only by switching off the ignition, that
the coil would have a chance to cool down and the
fault clear itself. Leaving the ignition on, and then being
able to restart the engine would indicate that another fault
is probable.
Hope this helps, Eric.
