Hey guys get off that particular band wagon. . . Lucas is/was Bad!
Lucas had the capability to make much better products. . but MG wouldn't pay the required price.
GM has/had the same credo "Don't tell me how to make it better, tell me how to make it cheaper"
Only Rolls Royce, to my knowledge required the BEST QUALITY of every part in order to make a vehicle dependable and lasting, regardless of cost.
And most owners of those had a full time mechanic/chauffeur to attend to them. They actually had to be trained at the Rolls factory to be allowed employment and responsibility for those very nice luxury cars. Can you imagine Mr. Ferrari requiring any prospective owner to attend a school before being allowed to spend his money on a Dino?
These days we have knockoffs of cheap goods. . cheaper still.
And yes it's a painful fact of life that the current rotors in particular are not good reproductions. ..
I too have had numerous problems with them. And with the carbon posts in Dizzy caps as well.

No offense intended, but just to be fair to Mr Ferrari, the factory in the past has required a buyer of a model of the more powerful cars to be taught by factory drivers how to drive the cars correctly. This has not been the case for lesser models, among which the Dino was included.
Pity the mechanics not in a Ferrari agency who have to deal with a Ferrari in trouble! We are lucky to have our cars from simpler times.

*"They actually had to be trained at the Rolls factory to be allowed employment and responsibility for those very nice luxury cars."
myth
And how about those late '70's RR? I had one. We called it the "stationary cloud" because it broke down so ofter.
I lost a hubcap once.....$1200 bucks!!
Frankly, Mercedes Benz built a better car....

This thread seems to be about quality. I would say that there is sufficient evidence out there to show that new German cars (BMW and Mercedes) do not have great reliability. Never owned a Rolls, but the low production volume mitigated against the factory ever getting everything right.
If quality means assembly fit and finish, plus reliability, the Japanese seem tough to beat.
However, I happen to love the quirks and foibles of my old MG, and find my Acura to be completely characterless.

Rick, Seems like we've been through this before... BMW
bashing. Don't know what your evidence for BMW's
reliability is, but coming from someone who uses 2
BMW's as daily drivers, they are without question the
most trouble free car I have ever known. Both my cars
have over 140,000 on them and other than tires and
brake pads there has been zip spent on them. Never
even plug changes.
A TC would be on it's 2nd engine overhaul, my Fathers
Roll's Royce's were always having problems, more than
my TC's!
I like the TC because you can fix about anything with
just a few simple tools. Your Jap cars you have to buy
a new component, no adjusting it. I have a friend with
an Acura and they are always having some little
problem. Last week the fuel door and trunk wouldn't
unlock. Nice! Out of gas and nothing short of a
crowbar to get fuel in! TC has no problems there. I
think I like the TC for being so simple and can excuse
it's short comings. Afterall, I'd rather look at it
than drive it. It looks better than it really is.
If anyone is still reading this, I suppose my last
sentence should receive some replies.

Chip,
At 64,000 miles my 1995 740i dropped a bolt out of the oil pump into the drive chain, result over $6,000.00 repair bill, out of warranty about 6 mo's. the factory said tough. By the way BMW extended the mileage warranty to 100,000, I wonder why? Just thought you might be interested in this. My next car? not a BMW.

Gee I wish my Lexus was less reliable. Just replaced the first clutch at
240K miles. I feel guilty trading it in but know its time is near. Anyone have
the new 3 series BMW E90? How is it?
I would buy another Lexus but they won't give me the manual trans. with the
big engine.
Sorry for the thread hijacking. Just could not resist.
