To put Lucas in perspective: Had a borrowed Acura on holiday. One day the electric window security switch toggle came off. Hmm, looks simple enough, but needs to be replaced - crappilly engineered plastic. Off to the Acura dealer. Got one? Why yes there is one in stock - $300!!! You have to replace the whole blamed console! Now if our LBCs had such a device you know it would be easily repairable.

Have a simular experience with my Opel (German General Motors): Had fitted a trailer coupling and need to activate the built in "flashing control lamp". Simple work: All you need is a lamp for ~ 1 $. The problem is that you you can t reach the place to fit it! You have to remove the complete console or break your arm 2 or 3 times! That s why I love this simple, old electrics on our M.G. s!! Lucas jokes are probably the automotive equivalent of blonde jokes! Frightfully amusing! But I have to agree with the other listers; Lucas equipment can take much abuse and still deliver. Most problems ARE caused by defective maintenance. Let's face it, who but we fanatics has the patience (expertise?) to deal with Lucas? All the best, David Lodge AJChalmers@aol.com wrote:

Oh I don't know about Lucas. 475,000 miles on TC 5905 and the generator failed. 510,000 miles and there went the starter. What's next? Probably a headlight bulb or something. I'm thankful that Lucas electrics in the 1931 F have not yet been afflicted. I fired up F0275 the other day and so far all works well and seems in good order. Seriously, as David Lodge says, a little maintenance will do wonders. Especially, with due regard to good clean grounds and junctures. Best Regards, Dick Shaler

Remember these cars were built when front end lubrication was required every 500-1000 miles. Are we all doing that? Electrics need a little attention also. That is what makes driving these things fun.If I wanted a dependable car, I would buy a Yugo. We all want to arrive safe and without a breakdown at our destination, but the adventure of driving a 50 year old+ car requires a certain respect for the age. Any of you over fifty? Don't you have to do a little maintenance daily? Brush your teeth, shower, bathe, shave, clean glasses/contacts,. Need a haircut occasionally, trim toenails at least once a year? Car are the same way, as we get older, we require a little more attention. As an aside: Women are the same way. I heard about a man who turned 42 and told his 40 year old wife we was going to trade her in for two twenty year olds. She replied, "I am not worried, I have been with you for 17 years, and you aren't wired for 220." PTH

Dick: My original Lucas coil failed after 52 years. I bet the replacement doesn't last that long. I still have the original starter. The only maintenance that I know of is that Joe Curto replaced the brushes a few years ago. Long live Lucas. Ken TC 4147 DickShaler@aol.com wrote:

Does anyone know whether the unheard from, British built, Beagle 2 has Lucas electricals? Is it possible to determine whether Beagle 2 made it to Mars by scanning the Martian surface for oil leaks? Badger [Non-text portions of this message have been removed]
