Adjusting Toe-in

Post by m.jablonski@mei.unimelb.edu.au » Wed Sep 05, 2001 11:18 pm

Dear Listers Is the 1/4" toe-in specified for the TC the total track difference between front and rear of rim measured across the car, wheel to wheel OR is it the difference between rim-to-centre-line dimension from front to rear of wheel i.e. the amount one wheel is out of parallel with the car centre-line? The second way would give twice the toe-in of the first. Thanks in advance. Mark Jablonski Melbourne Australia

Hi Mark, Front to rear, and you should turn the wheels 1/2 turn when you measure the rear so the measurement is taken on the same point on the rims ( in case you have a bent rim ). I use a quick method by holding two four foot long straight edges on the outside of the tires at mid height, then measure the distance between immediately in front of the wheel and then again 24" out in front of the wheel. The last measurement should be about 3/16" ( not 1/4" ) smaller than the first. Repeat several times at different tire/wheel locations by moving the car forward half a wheel turn or whatever. The 24" represents the approximate diameter where the tire is fattest. Not rocket science but it works. Wheel to wheel, not wheel to centerline. -- Chip Old 1948 M.G. TC TC6710 XPAG7430 NEMGTR #2271 Cub Hill, Maryland 1962 Triumph TR4 CT3154LO CT3479E fold@bcpl.net
