Thanks one and all for suggestions. I never told you it is a TF here but they electrics and ignition are the same. We have replaced cap twice(First one removed had the carbon coil contact recessed into the cylinder, I poked around and then stretched the spring. We replaced it from our other car anyway) , rotor once more , checked spark to plugs {None} replaced condensor again. We have fuel but need to check whether it is arriving(the pump keeps on clicking) Have obtained a new condensor (yet to be installed and when we do will check for insulator washer on points mount and on low tension lead bolt. The car did run and we are mystified. Will report progress. . . Sally

Sally, I haven't been following this thred so I don't know where you are in the scheme of things but have you checked or changed the coil? You may have a bad coil. I have seen them that work until they get a little warm, then quit. Best, Ray McCrary "Speed is Life; of course Luck and Altitude are helpful, too."

I'm completely with Ray on this:- I believed I had a fuel vaporisation problem, hot engine wouldn't start. It was the coil, as soon as it cooled down the engine would start!!!!!!!!!
