xpag head nuts

Post by Walter Prechsl privat » Sun Jul 15, 2001 1:08 pm

hi friends, is there any practical advise to tighten the head nuts of the XPAG without removing the rockers? the problem of doing that job are the push rods at the sides and the rocker shaft above. is there a special spanner construction or how did you do that without removing the rocker assembly? thanks walter

Walter when it comes to those studs under the rockers we have a 3/8 drive socket which fits the nut, we install the socket and then come down from the top with a 3/8 drive extension. There are lots of different diameters and external sizes of tools so just hunt around until you find the right combination. I think ours are a Proto socket and a Snap-on extension. Joe

I use a 3/8 drive , thin wall socket with a narrow extention,(narrow shaft) this will clear the rockers. Will

We do the same thing. Just be sure you use a good quality narrow extension. Wayne broke one in half while removing some head studs and cut his hand badly. It was a New Britain tool and we thought of good quality. Never gave any sign of failure until it snapped in two. Guess we should have use a Snap On tool instead.

Re: [mg-tabc] xpag head nuts All this talk (what about the torque?) about head nuts would give the "good ol' boys" in the factory much amusement. The "official" tool was of course a very spindly looking ring spanner with a slightly bulbous end, for hitting with a hammer!!! Managed to find one, with its MG logo, many years ago at Beaulieu autojumble, but I doubt that many folks use these nowadays... ocTagonally TCRoger

I'm surprised you mention hitting said spanner with a hammer. I wait with bated breath for the many replies suggesting use of a rock ala Badger. How do you compute the torque?
I also found a couple of these spanners but will only use when I have the answer to the above.

Hitting spanner with a 1" rock will produce a max torque of 10 lbs. A 2" rock will produce 20 lbs., etc. There, now you know!! Bob
