Brakes?
Has anyone got any suggestions? My wife's 1947 TC has developed a
frightening habit of veering sharply to the left whenever the brakes are
applied. I've serviced the wheel pistons and all four are coming out at the
same time; I've replaced the return springs incase the old ones weren't
pulling the shoes back enough; I've bled the system; I've filed down the
leading edges of the shoes; the King pins are fine and have no discernable
movement; all the steering links are fine with little or no play. Have I
missed something staring me in the face?

Has any brake fluid, grease, or oil gotten in the linings? Use some
brake cleaner fluid on them. You could also soak them in some
flamable liquid and then light them up. The heat won't hurt them and
will draw the contamination to the surface and burn off. Also make
sure the drums are not scored or grooved.

Geoff, You might want to check whether the front left brake drum is out of round, a problem I had a couple of years ago. It will cause the drum to snatch when the brakes are applied. You should be able to tell quite easily by the raising the wheel off the ground and spinning the wheel with the brakes adjusted to just brush the drum. The drums can be skimmed, within limits, on a brake lathe. Cheers, Dave Aberdeen TC9964

I had this problem and it drove me nuts until I realized that one of the brake shoes was bent. I replaced the shoe and it's been fine ever since. If thats not it replace the brake hose. It may have deteriorated on the inside. With an easy brake application it will pass fluid but under a normal application a small piece of loose rubber may be acting like a valve and will block thw flow of fluid.

Sluggish or weak right side brakes will cause the car to veer left! Those are the breaks! You think YOU have a problem.
My wife's car has an even MORE frightening habit! It veers sharply
towards virtually any retail ladies dress shop displaying the single
word 'SALE' within its front window.

Geoff, Another suggestion, I had a similar problem with a friends TC. The car dived right when the brakes were applied. He tried everything, changing wheels cylinders, brake hoses, brake drums etc and no improvement. So he took the whole brake back plate assemblies off and brought them to me. Turned out he had the left brake shoes on incorrectly and the steps on bottom of the shoes were offset the wrong way on the bottom pivot. So only the edges of the shoes were making contact on the left brake drum. Obvious when pointed out to him but he spent weeks trying to sort it out. Bob Geoff:

Congress has the same prpblem as the 47TC: veers sharply to the left when
brakes are applied!

Brakes?
Thanks all!
Lots of good tips. I've already checked the 'ovality' of the drums and
they're fine. The shoes are true and installed correctly. There is proper
brake fluid in the pipes, not the synthetic stuff which doesn't always
lubricate the seal tips properly. I'm guessing that perhaps the brake hoses
are at fault. I'm planning to install braided hoses anyway so - fingers
crossed!
